Is Olives Closed For Good?

A sign posted in the front window of the City Square restaurant on Friday stated the 'premises is closed until further notice.'

It’s well past the time for April Fool’s jokes, so it’s unclear what the story is with the closed sign on the front of Todd English’s Olives restaurant in Charlestown, as seen in the above image shared by a Patch reader on Friday.

Phone calls to the City Square eatery went unanswered Friday afternoon, and a paper sign posted on the front window, which is papered over, reads: “NOTICE: THE PREMISES IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.”

The sign suggests that all inquiries and requests for access be directed to Louis Karger of City Square Holdings LLC. Patch left a message with Karger on Friday afternoon.

A message also was left with the media office for Todd English Enterprises.

In April, rumors of the restaurant’s closure circulated on the Boston Globe and various food blogs. At the time, word was that a Legal Sea Foods Legal Test Kitchen would be moving into the spot.

But soon after, English sent out an official statement denying the news, calling it an “April Fools Day rumor” and reassuring customers that “Olives is most certainly not closing.”

No official statement regarding this latest notice had been posted on the company website as of 3 p.m. Friday.
