Boston Celtics, BPS Officials Open New Computer Lab at Charlestown School

Two members of the Boston Celtics gathered with Charlestown students earlier this week for the grand opening of the Harvard-Kent Elementary School's new Boston Celtics Computer Lab. 

Newly-drafted Celtics rookies Marcus Smart and James Young joined about 30 Harvard-Kent students on Monday, June 30 at the lab, which was donated by the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation Player Choice Grant. 

Working with Boston's Office of Instructional & Information Technology's (OIIT), the Celtics organization completed a $50,000 upgrade of the computer lab in less than three weeks' time, according to Boston school officials.

"I cannot thank the Celtics organization enough for this wonderful new lab," said Harvard-Kent Principal Jason Gallagher in a statement. "The students are thrilled to have the best computer lab in the Boston Public Schools and we are looking forward to using the lab to ensure our students have access to the best technology available."

The lab itself features 30 new Mac computers, a 70-inch flat-panel television and is decorated with Boston Celtics graphics, as well as a "Harvard-Kent PRIDE" wall.

Cynthia Brennan, Director of the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation headed the work on the new lab along with Dave Hoffman, Director of Community Relations for the Boston Celtics, and Hoffman's assistant, Sam Taub, school officials said. 

From Boston Public Schools, Mark Racine and Joe McLaughlin led the work from OIIT with help from Harvard-Kent teacher Cathy License.
