Jim Crowley; WWII Veteran, Knight of Columbus Member

Funeral mass to be celebrated Wednesday, Sept

James H. "Jim" Crowley, a life-long Charlestown resident who served in the Army during World War II, died on August 30, 2013 in Stoneham.

Crowley was 91.

Crowley was born in Boston on Oct. 13, 1921, a son of the late James H. Crowley and Margaret (Bratton) Crowley. He grew up in Charlestown and attended St. Mary’s Parochial School and graduated from Commerce High School in Boston.

He enlisted into the United States Army on Sept. 12, 1942 and served his country with honor and pride during World War II. He was honorably discharged on January 14, 1946 with the rank of Technician Fourth Grade.

Crowley furthered his education following his discharge from the Army and attended Boston University and graduated in 1951 with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration. He also attended Northeastern University later in his life and received his Masters in Public Administration.

Crowley worked for the state for more than 40 years where he established the first child support program in the state of Massachusetts, retiring several years ago as the Director of the Food Stamp Program in Boston.

Following his retirement Jim was involved as a ombudsman which is a liason between clients and their complaints with any agency. He considered himself a Anglophile, traveling to England many times with his wife during their lifetime together after serving there during World War II.

He enjoyed playing hockey and played for the U.S. Army hockey team. 

Crowley was also a member of Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association and the Bunker Hill Council # 62 of the Knights of Columbus. 

Loving husband of 40 years to Denise Cronin and devoted father of Meg Crowley of Charlestown and the late James H. Crowley Jr. of Medford.

Crowley was also the brother of Margaret White of Wilmington and the late John Crowley, Rita Toomey & Catherine Mancini. Uncle to Edward White, Maureen Beraldi, Karen Breton, James White, Rita Cunningham and Edward Toomey.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jim's funeral on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 9 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St., Charlestown. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Mary's Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

Visiting hours is Tuesday, Sept. 3, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
