Mistress Bradstreet-America's First Poet

Charlotte Gordon, author of "Mistress
Bradstreet" will share Bradstreet's life as she was transplanted from
England to the New World in 1630 at the age of 18 years old. Arriving only a
decade after the Pilgrims, Anne Bradstreet had to adapt from an educated gentle
woman to a frontier farmer and wife who had to live under the grasp of the
Protestant dissenters.


Woman in the early 17th century were considered intellectually
weak and unable to understand law, science sand most challenging-poetry. In
addition in the early days in Charlestown, most faced the hardships of near starvation, illness, isolation, death of family and friends and Indian attacks.
