Blessing of the Throats at St. Mary Church

This weekend, February 1-2

Monday, February 3, is the feast of
Saint Blaise. As is our tradition, we will celebrate the feast this
weekend. After all of the weekend Masses, we will bless the throats of
all who come forward. While invoking the intercession of St. Blaise, we
will pray that all are protected from afflictions of the throat and from
other illnesses.

St. Blaise was bishop of Sebaste in
Armenia in the fourth century. Before being martyred, he is said to have
healed a boy who was choking. Since the eighth century, Saint Blaise
has been venerated as the patron of those who suffer from diseases of
the throat. The blessing of Saint Blaise is a sign of our faith in God’s
protection and love for us and for the sick.
