Top Stories: Goodbye, Alleged Dog Poisoner Held

Notable stories from the week of Sept. 24-28.

We know it can be easy to fall behind on the news. If you fell behind this week, here are five stories we think you should look at:

Alleged dog-poisoner held on bail, fired: The announcement we reported Tuesday that the Bricklayer's Local 3 had terminated Kenneth Hyland, 53, of Everett likely marks the last we'll hear of this story for the foreseeable future. Hyland is now in the criminal justice system and is also facing unrelated charges. Working his way through may take some time.

Charlestown man charged with tax evasion, helping Suffolk Downs bettors: Gary Boyar, 53, was charged with corruptly endeavoring to impede the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), filing a false income tax return, and two counts of tax evasion in an indictment returned on Sept. 13, 2012.

How to run for the Charlestown Neighborhood Council: Elections are coming up, and the council shared with us this week what you need to know to throw your name in the ring.

Charlestown gets new hometown hockey team: The Suffolk University Club Ice Hockey Team just moved to the Emmons Horrigan O'Neil Memorial Rink and would like to extend an invitation to the community of Charlestown to come out and support the local University as it marks it's first year in the Atlantic College Hockey Association (Division II).

Goodbye, Charlestown: This last one comes from me. I announced Monday that Friday (the day on which I wrote and scheduled this post) would be my last day. I’m not moving directly on to another full-time job. Instead, I’m taking a run at freelancing. You can keep up with me at mattmcaseywrites.com and gistpodcast.com. You can also look for my byline in local publications. With any luck, you’ll see it soon.
