Mass General Plans to Screen Patients for Substance Abuse

All patients will be asked about alcohol and drug use starting this fall.

If you're a patient at Massachusetts General Hospital, plan on answering a few questions regarding drug and alcohol use at your next visit.

Starting this fall, the MGH plans to question all patients about their use of alcohol and drugs starting. Specifically, hospital staff will ask patients whether they've used an illegal drug in the past year, as well as how often they may have had six or more drinks on one occasion, regardless of the reason for their visit, the Boston Globe reported Monday

The move is part of an effort to curb addition so that doctors can conduct "bedside intervention" and arrange for potential treatment, according to the report.
