Boston's Callahan Tunnel Set to Reopen by March Deadline

With repairs nearly complete, the tunnel is expected to reopen by Wednesday, March 12.

Officials with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation are expecting to reopen the Callahan Tunnel by its deadline of Wednesday, March 12 or earlier, according to Boston.com

The 52-year-old roadway was closed on Dec. 27 as port of a $34.9 million project to repair the tunnel’s deck, curb line, gutters and replacement of the tunnel’s wall panels, as well as rebuild the concrete flooring which had reportedly deteriorated to the point that a manhole fell through the foundation of a deck into an air duct, according to Boston.com.

Highway Administrator Frank Depaola said the prospect that crews will finish construction by March 12 is nearly certain, and officials expect to know this week if the tunnel will reopen to traffic on March 12 or if it will be in the days to follow, according to the report.
