Residents Report Landscaper Attempting to Poison Dogs
Three residents report seeing a landscaper leave hot dog pieces on the grass at 550 Medford Street.
If you walk your dog on Medford Street near its intersection with Main Street and Bunker Hill Street, don’t let it eat anything.
Three dog owners recently told police at District A-15 they saw a landscaper at the Bricklayers Apprentice Fund at 550 Medford St. leave what they believe to be poisoned hot dog pieces on the grass.
The resident who reported the incident told police that he saw the landscaper with “a [five]-gallon bucket of a blue/green solution believed to be antifreeze with hot dogs soaking inside.”
The witness said that he saw the landscaper spread the hotdog pieces around in the grass after completing his work.
“The witness confronted the suspect, stating ‘are you trying to poison the dogs?’” a police report read.
“The suspect replied ‘yes,’” the witness told police. The pair argued before the landscaper left. Once the landscaper had gone, the witness collected the hot dog pieces in his own five-gallon bucket before informing police of the incident. Two neighbors accompanied him to the district A-15 police department. They told officers that they had seen the same man performing the landscaping at earlier times and had noticed hotdog pieces left behind after his departure.
Durty Harry’s Doggie Boutique posted on Facebook that several customers have reported having sick dogs, possibly as a result of the hot dog pieces.
Police took the collected hotdogs as evidence. As of Wednesday morning, according to the department, the case had not been updated and was still under investigation.
The woman who answered the phone at the Bricklayers Apprentice Fund said that no one within the organization would speak to the press on this matter.

My dog was extremely ill Friday night, and needed to be taken to the animal hospital after repeated and unrelenting bouts of diarrhea and vomiting. He's never been ill that way before, so how about we put aside the petty snipes and address the serious issue at hand.

Its of little matter if there's an Obama sign or a Romney sign or whatever sign. Please stay on topic Amy.
This person is endangering the lives of people's pets and being completely forthcoming about it. I hope the Boston Police will follow up on this and the Bricklayers will issue an apology to the town. They should be ashamed of themselves. Its one thing to ask people to clean up after their dogs, its another thing to try to kill an animal.

So you're implying that it's the Bricklayers who are behind the landscaper doing this? I doubt they, as well as any sane person, would continue to hire a landscaper found doing something like this.

I'm noy implying anything, but its happening on their property and people's dogs are getting sick. Surely they feel bad about it. As good community partners, wouldn't you think they'd want to apologize?

Actually, the bricklayers employ this man and I have spoken to them about it. They have said that he will continue to work for them despite eye witness testimony that he is a dog killer. The bricklayers have a good deal of explaining to do.

Does anyone know when this happened? My dog was extremely sick Friday night (took him to the ER) - and we had no idea why. He seems to be fine now, but I'm thinking this might be what caused it. I don't walk him over there but I think my dog walker may from time to time.
This is unbelievable and disgusting. Hope this person does some jail time.

My dog walker didn't seem surprised about this when I asked her about it this morning. She said "that dog hater's been around a while" and that she "avoids that area like the plague." So this has been going on for a while? Clearly something needs to be done once and for all.

Amy's comment is accurate. That is the location where someone is purposely poisoning dogs. So that's who owns the lot and is putting up the sign. The Bricklayers....Glad I've seen kids playing on that grass.
This begs the question, will the BPD look at the security tapes from the Local 25 cameras to see if they can capture this a$$hole committing these horrendous acts? Those cameras I'm sure have a great angle of that lot. Let me guess, they've been erased.

I agree 100% that this is wrong - they should not be poisioning the dogs. My guess is that the Bricklayers or the owners of that property are fed-up with people that do not clean up after their dogs. It;s not the dogs fault that the owners are irresponsible... so for someone to do this is just awful. I wish there was a way - to wake up the owners of these dogs and make them clean up after them. It is not fair that they allow their pets to ruin other peoples property. Again - I by no means agree with what this landscaper has done!

I clean up after my dog every single time, no exceptions. But there's a big difference between "not picking up a turd" and "killing someone's pet," just like there's a big difference between littering and committing murder. I think people should be fined for not cleaning up after their dogs if/when they are caught. And I think that the person putting these hot dogs out (and/or whoever is paying him to do it) should go to jail. Simple.

I am a dog owner and with that comes picking up their crap - no one is entitled to leaving their dogs crap for someone else. I am appalled at the alleged behavior of the landscaper. I am a close neighbor of the person that filed the police report. I was present when the hot dogs were picked up on Sunday the 16th.
Throwing 'poisonous' hot dogs to get back at owners who don't pick up their dogs crap is totally backwards - you aren't punishing the owners directly, you are hurting the dogs.
As for the Bricklayers, I also know them well too. They wouldn't hire anyone who would conduct such outrageous behavior. I can understand how they would want the investigation to continue rather than do anything rash. It is not their fault directly either.
I do know that that area is usually a land mine. The only way to keep that area free of dog crap is to put a fence around it. Otherwise all you can do is ask nicely and hope owners do the right thing. But poisonous hot dogs is the wrong solution.
One of my big concerns is where else is this happening? If this landscaper allegedly did put these hot dogs here and he has other accounts, how many other dogs have gotten ill or will get ill?

ctown11 - of course you don't see it happen, but take a run or walk any morning, and there are landmines all over. next to trees that line our sidewalks, on the sidewalks, next to entrances of homes. you are correct to say that most are good, but there are several that aren't, and that's a problem.

I'm the messenger here... I spoke at length with the Business Manager at the Bricklayers' Union today, and he is aware of the landscaper's "alleged" behavior. He said that a BPD detective has been to see him and is investigating. The landscaper has denied this activity. I sincerely hope that BPD is going to take this investigation all the way - and quickly. The Business Manager also stated that the landscaper is "done for the season" already, but that he has NOT been fired because the investigation is not complete! He reported that at one point, someone from his office ("Mr. Landscaper" maybe?) cleaned the grassy area of all dog poop and left it on the sidewalks - got cited for that one. Next, a follow-up with BPD!

I know it's not always possible to monitor everything every second, but my first thought is "Who lets their dog eat something they find in the street?" We can't control in advance what some nutjob may do in a public space: so we 'll have to control what our dogs do in a public space -- be it pooping or eating.

It's amazing how quickly a dog can locate a "treat" and get it in his mouth. I am super over-protective of my dog (and feed him very expensive, healthy dog food), but if he discovers an old chicken wing bone in some grass during a walk, he can stealthily attack that thing before I can even react.
So even for the most diligent pet parent, we can't protect them from everything.

For many people a dog is the only family they have. There are also many people who support unions that give us a voice. I am a person who both support our right to a union and a right to have a dog as part of our family.
We are having an election that could forever weaken the strength of a union and give Americans the right to tie a dog to the roof of a car. Let's focus on our bigger goal but make any human that would poison a family member or pet financially responsible for any costs, give an apology and allow us to move on.

To the person who asked "how can you let your dog eat trash in the street" -- I would reply that most dogs are quicker than people. Many times my Chesapeake Bay Retriever would put all 80 pounds of his energy into lunging for something and would swallow before I could pry it out of his mouth. This story makes me ill. This hits close to home because we used to walk by the bricklayers' building once a day. My Chessie died last January after a nonspecific gastrointestinal illness. Obviously, nobody is landscaping in January, so there probably was no connection but I hope most of all that this perpetrator is prosecuted. I am glad someone has posted specific contact information on the Animal Cruelty people.

@ Doc...I used to own a Chessie "Duke" and I agree - the 80 lbs. of bull weight and pure determination, the dog would quickly grab something in it's mouth! LOL My Irish Setter now is 10 pounds lighter is much faster - but I do make an effort to try to either avoid the trash or remove it from her mouth> I know it's not easy by any means!

So if dogs stop pissing on the grass the ground would be totally clean ? It's the freaking ground it's dirty always has been and always will be, it's not just dogs that are pissing on the ground, it's not the kitchen floor of your home so get over it and deal with it. It's outside, it's not your property. How are you going to stop birds and other wild animals from pissing and shitting on the ground ? Your kid shouldn't be sitting on the ground anyways, put a blanket down or bring a chair. God knows what else has been on the grass (puke, dirty needles, human piss etc)

I could care less if anyone respects my dog or me. But yea, your comment is educated, I bought that dog so I shouldn't let it piss outside on grass where every dog has pissed forever. And most parks don't say no dogs in parks, it says no dogs in certain areas. The ISD should start writing tickets for parents that don't pick up after their kids and leave popped balloons, trash, etc. I'll continue to let my dog piss anywhere I want except for on someone elses property and you could always let your kids play on the grass, a little dog piss probably wont kill them but if they picked up a cigarette but on the ground and ate it, it prob wouldn't be good. Lets just illegalize dogs in Charlestown!! I agree bunker hill day should be a national holiday, so you are right about one thing. lets just agree to disagree bc there will never be a law passed against dogs pissing in parks.

If you are letting your animal relieve themselves on private property, than legally you are trespassing. Why would you let your dog walk through an area of grass that is loaded with pet waste in the first place? Vets will tell you that many parasites can be passed on to animals and humans through contact with feces. If you seen your dog eating anything, why wouldn't you try to take it out of their mouth? Who knows what that food has been exposed to laying on the ground? The first issue is, your animal does not belong on private property. If your animal does relieve itself, than please pick up after it. There are not many places in the city to bring a dog, but because a piece of private property has some grass, doesn't mean the entire neighborhood is "entitled" to use it. We also have to be responsible for where we walk our pets. I am careful any where I walk my dog (street grates, broken glass, etc.) If I see food laying on the ground, I walk my dog around it. If she happens to grab something, I do whatever I can to remove it. Whether people are dog owners or not no one wants to step in poop. The people who allow their dogs to defecate anywhere and not pick it up, are as bad as the scumbag who tried to poison them. GOOD pet owners don't do this. It's the handful of people who shouldn't have a pet in the first place that walk away. The Bricklayers have been good neighbors, they can't control what others do. I am done adding my two cents and my Irish Setter needs to go out. :-)

Dog owners - just pick up after your dog and don't let them piss on our front stoops and potted plants. Respect your neighbors. It's a rather simple solution to keep the peace. Don't you think?

Mary E, do you realize that your comments make no sense ? You shouldn't be calling anyone any names especially calling someone ignorant your an idiot. And I am a pig because I told some guy his kid shouldn't be sitting on the dirty ground anyways ? No sense what so ever. If I told him he SHOULD let his kid sit directly on the dirty ground then yes that would make sense. You either are dumb as rocks or you have a reading comprehension problem. What school did you graduate (if you even did) from so I can makes sure no one I know goes there. We do NOT need anymore idiots in this world.

@Just a person ... I can assure you that it would not be okay to shoot my dog or any dog. That is going a little too far don't you think? And its quite the immature statement to make. The thing is, I wouldn't allow my dog on your property in the first place. As always I will stick to not compromising my values by respecting my neighbors privacy and personal property. But common sense would also prevail that if on the off chance she broke off her leash and squatted on your lawn, I would immediately be cleaning it up and apologizing for it happening. This is called being civilized and respectful.

I must add....if you see someone letting their dog relieve itself whether it be on a public or private property and they don't pick it up, then speak up! These are the people who make the rest of us (responsible dog owners) look bad. I think the local neighborhood watch should really get involved in calling out these people. If not thepm than local law enforcement. And everyone wonders why dogs get banned out of Parks and off of beaches...???? Because of the same knuckleheads who let their dogs poop all over the place and leave it there. Its not the dog's fault. Its the owner's responsibility. If I see someone doing that I do speak up. Yes, I have been told some not so nice responses back, but at least I spoke up. And really, I will call animal control, I don't care who it is. Dont own a dog if you can't properly take care of it. Buy a goldfish instead.

Just Wondering - Please leave Eugene O'flaherty out of this i understand that it is his brother in law but he is not responsible for what other people do when he is not around. If you are a real townie then you know he does everything he can not only for the town but all the people in it. He actually cares what goes on around here and tries to help make it a nicer place to live, and not only when he is up for re-election either. He really would help anyone of us if we needed it and he was able so please i understand why it seems to be a big deal but if you only knew everything hes done around here you would not even have posted that thank you

Well people, if u have live around Kenneth Hyland for 2 yrs, then u would understand wat he is about. i grew up in Chelsea n just recently moved to the Chelsea YMCA in 2008. when i met Kenneth, he seemed to be a loner, but when i finally got a chance to meet him in person, he seemed like a nice guy. "but to tell u the truth" he was just n is a troubled person! We became friends in the beginning, then soon enough, he became a total ass, not just to me but to everyone at the YMCA. His demeanor changed and he became very violent. He didn't like people greetin him or even talkin to him. Most people tried to stay away, but in our situation, that was hard to do considering we ran into him in the halls when he had something to complain about. So if u think Kenneth deserves to be in jail, I will admit that he needs psyciatric help n then some. This is just my opinion, considering wat I,ve been through with him within the past few years.
