Tom,
I disagree. Sometimes it's safer for a cyclists to SAFELY roll through a red light to get ahead of traffic. Illegal, yeah, but there isn't a motorist in Boston who comes to a dead stop at every stop sign or who doesn't roll through a yellow that turns red while they're in the intersection.
It seems motorists want it both ways. They don't want bikes ahead of them, but also want cyclists to be held to the same las as vehicles (which is misguided). It's silly.

Wow, what a weak retort. My point was that in a suburban environment, people should expect that drivers, angry and miserable as many of them are, rule the roads. Fine. I'll concede that. But in the city, it's our world. Concede that and cyclists and motorists can get along (as long as motorists calm the hell down and lay off the gas in the middle of the city).

I live right near both and have no issues dealing with bikes on sidewalks. Drivers like to make up fake statistics, as if cyclists are careening down the sidewalk aiming for pedestrians. The fact remains that drivers are the aggressive and angry ones. Fact.

What does that even mean? Because we are lucky enough to live in the "first world", we shouldn't discuss issues that effect us? Get real.

But many of us do like 3 miles from work (for me 1.5 miles), so biking is realistic. These car people need ot realize that the world does not revolve around them.

ReplyFor me it all comes down to this: are we talking about city cycling or suburban cycling? I'm a city dweller, and I believe that pedestrians and cyclists should get priority in an urban environment.

Mark,
Do you ever commute via bike in the city? If so, you should know that a bicycle and a motorcycle are completely different animals. Bike across the city sometime. Then get back to us and let us know how oh so graceous people behind the wheel are. I deal with aggression on a daily basis from drivers. You want to drive in the city? Then accept that cars are not at the top of the food chain.

Uh...what? Are you saying that bike riders don't also pay taxes that help upkeep the roads?
