On the article Boston Schools Get New Student Assignment Policy

ReplyFYI The new home-based plan will generate a list of 6 -18 (or more) schools to choose from based on address, quality of the schools closest to address and other factors. I give credit to Peng Shi for his innovation in creating the plan, but have several concerns about what will happen since a lot of the data this plan is based on is in question.
Off to write a recap of the night for my blog.

On the article Snowstorm: Absent Boston Students to be Marked 'Constructively Present'

ReplyThey should have made the "constructively present" decision BEFORE school and let us know via news. I did not get a robo-call about it until 1:15pm - NOT HELPFUL! I spent 4.5 hours transporting my two daughters to the Irving Middle School (right around the corner from me) and Urban Science Academy at the West Roxbury High School Complex! I live on Brown Ave - usually at most would have been an hour to and from both schools.
My @IrvingMSBPS daughter would not agree to stay home as it would have ruined her perfect attendance & my @UrbanSci daughter was recently ill so could not miss another day, so we had no choice as we were not told they wouldn't be penalized. I believe the staff who could not make it in should not be penalized either by the way!

On the article Who Would You Vote For: Menino or Connolly?
Karen Kast

ReplyMenino.
Let us please remember that the City Council and our state legislators also impact Boston by their actions (or lack thereof), so stop blaming the issues in Boston JUST on Menino, John also has played a part in the good and not-so-good issues that impact our city, just as all the city councilors do.
After all, ALL the issues are impacted by politics. I have had enough experience over the years, especially when trying to retain funding for the BPS Spec Ed PAC, to know how it all works - if you want to get something changed you make deals and compromise, otherwise it doesn't happen - which is (somewhat) how it is supposed to work. So folks, when blaming Menino try to remember - he is the figurehead and generally has to have the support of the city councilors to make things happen.
The CC also needs to prioritize what to work on, and usually do so according to what the needs are and the public has a lot to do with that. If you want something changed (like parking), work on it - make calls, tweet, create a facebook, get others of like mind involved,go to City Hall & testify! Make it a priority by getting enough people involved, city-wide, THEN you may see it fixed! And don't just complain, make suggestions for solving the issues!
If YOU aren't willing to do the work to make changes or make it a priority, why would anyone else? I have my own priorities & yes, I have done all of the above!

On the article Boston School Choice Meetings - None in Roslindale for 3 Proposals - Yet

ReplyPlease attend one of the meetings! I will keep lobbying for one to be held here in Roslindale or West Roxbury, but just in case - PLEASE ATTEND!
Unfortunately, since even the EAC members do not fully understand the proposals themselves, these community meetings are going to be interesting, but probably not as informative as folks think. For an idea of what is going to go on, and the info (though one proposal has since been modified) not complete yet, please see the video of Monday, Feb 4 community forum http://www.cityofboston.gov/cable/video_library.asp?id=2951
