Great idea. I don't know, though, if Building 108 is going anytime soon. For more about the power plant, see http://charlestown.patch.com/articles/building-108-the-navy-yard-power-plant. It would seem that building needs to be dealt with first, before anyone can consider functional re-use of the Rope Walk. It is a lovely thought, however, to have a large public market in C'town.

ReplyThis came in an e-mail: "I grew up traveling the Tobin Bridge - it was my connect into Boston. It's got such a particular feel to me, that bridge. I guess it's the green steel. One winter I remember driving over the bridge during a blizzard. There wasn't another car in sight. It was one of the prettiest, most terrifying experiences I've ever had."

ReplyIt is true that "At This Address" has been discontinued. I got word Thursday night. This happened once before and several months later Matt, the editor then, asked me to pick it up again. I think it's a financial decision, as it was before, and also a matter of PATCH maybe rethinking its focus. I don't feel bad at all about this. I have had so much fun writing these columns and have learned so much about the history in Charlestown and have a deep respect for our roots here, yours and mine. I really long, however, to get back to some of my own writing and have found it challenging to do both, plus teaching English. I'd like to take time and look back on all the pieces that make up "At this Address," and get a better sense of everything I've written. A friend of mine often says "Acceptance is the Answer." I like that.

That's a great question, Mary. This is the hill below what used to be St Francis de Sales School (now Orchard Hill condos). I wonder if anyone knows how the hill got the name Nanny Goat Hill.

ReplyThis request came via e-mail: "I'm looking for pictures of Sprague Street Charlestown before the housing project was built. Lived there in the '30s and 40's." Any suggestions where this reader might look?

This request came via e-mail. Does anyone have photos? Sounds like such a great idea. "I am a resident in Charlestown and am on the Charlestown Community Center board. We are have a fundraiser on April 12 2013 to raise money for the Clougherty pool renovations. Our goal is to bring back the roof deck snack bar! For the event we are looking for a photo looking towards the G.R. White building from the pool side from the 1970's era when the roof deck was in full swing. We plan to enlarge this photo and print the tag line "let's bring it back!" at the top of it. Would anyone have any such images we can use for this Fundraiser? Thanks you for you consideration, Petra Eldh"
