Boston Schools To Launch New Recycling Program

Students will be setting up the program during Green Week (Feb. 4-8) at eight schools.

Boston students, teachers and administrators are using National Green Week this year, Feb. 4-8, to a set up single stream recycling program. Single stream recycling means paper, glass, plastic and metal can all be recycled together. The items are then sorted at a recycling center, which makes it simpler for residents to collect recycle materials and avoids excess waste being sent to landfills. Through an extended day program offered by City Year, 322 students at the Blackstone, Hennigan, Holland, Marshall, Mattahunt, Orchard Gardens and Tobin schools will participate in Green Week lessons, activities and games to prepare them for successful single stream recycling at home and at school, according to Boston Public Schools. City Schools Planning for Single-Stream Recycling

Officials with Boston Public Schools are looking for a vendor that could bring single-stream recycling to the district this year.

Boston Public Schools are switching to single-stream recycling this year to decrease their overall waste. With single-stream recycling, students, teachers and other school staff wouldn’t have to sort paper from cardboard from plastic. Instead, they would be able to put all recyclable materials in one container. Phoebe Beierle, a UTC Center for Green Schools fellow, will work with the district for three years to implement recycling and other environmental programs at the schools. She said most city schools would have the new recycling system by November.
