Whole Foods Looking To Open Quickly

Renovations are underway at the former Johnnie's Foodmaster in Charlestown, with plans for an upcoming job fair.

The transformation of Johnnie’s Foodmaster into a Whole Foods Market is moving ahead, with a goal of opening “as quickly as possible,” according to a company spokesperson. The former Johnnie’s building, located in Charlestown’s Bunker Hill Mall, has been closed since November as the building undergoes renovations. Whole Foods Market spokesperson Heather McCready said she does not yet have an estimated completion date but that work continues as scheduled. Company officials said last fall that they expected the store to open by late summer or the following autumn. “The renovations are underway, and our goal is to open as quickly as possible,” McCready said in an email. “Once we have a clearer picture of when the store will be ready, we will …

New Year's Grocery Shuttle Schedule

Here are the upcoming transportation options available to Charlestown residents.

Planning a New Year's Eve party or a family feast on the first day of 2013? Johnnie's Foodmaster is closed while it is being renovated into a Whole Foods, but there are several options for Charlestown residents who need a ride to the grocery store.  Here's a look at the free service schedule for the next few days: Shuttle to Whole Foods (Beacon Hill)  Shuttle to Stop and Shop (Medford) No service offered.  Shuttle to Stop and Shop (Medford) Special New Year's Eve shuttle to Shaw's (Somerville) No service offered. The John F. Kennedy Family Service Center is hosting a phone line for the weekly shuttle schedule. For shuttle times and other information, call 617-241-8866 ext. 1322.

Need to pick up a turkey, egg nog, stocking stuffers or just the basics? Here's a look at the free bus services available to Charlestown residents.

Whether you've got company coming, want some sweet stocking stuffers or just need to grab a few staples, it's not as easy anymore as walking down to Johnnie's Foodmaster, now that the store is closed while it is being renovated into a Whole Foods. I took the shuttle to Stop & Shop on Friday and there is some confusion as to where they pick up & drop off. I waited on West School St and Main St, but the shuttle was not there, so I walked down to the mall and there ist was. The shuttle driver was told by the Mall Security that he could not be in the mall, but had to pick on Main & West School Street. The shuttle driver had a valid argument, …   more ›

Complete Grocery Shuttle Schedule Announced

The Charlestown Neighborhood Council is distributing a complete list of transportation options available to local residents.

[UPDATE Friday, 6:53 a.m.] Johnnie's Foodmaster may be closed, but there are plenty of places nearby where Charlestown residents can go for food and other staples. And three supermarket companies are helping residents get there by offering free weekly shuttle services. Shuttles include: Most shuttles pick customers up in the Bunker Hill Mall, near the now closed Johnnie's Foodmaster building—which is set to reopen as a Whole Foods sometime next year. Stop and Shop Announces Free Shuttle Schedule

Another supermarket company is offering transportation to Charlestown residents while the former Johnnie's Foodmaster is closed.

[UPDATE Tuesday, 3:50 p.m.] Stop and Shop has joined other area supermarkets companies in offering a free shuttle service to Charlestown residents while the former Johnnie’s Foodmaster is closed. Stop and Shop, working with the Charlestown Neighborhood Association and the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, has come up with a shuttle schedule—offering free transportation to and from their Medford store Wednesdays through Saturdays. CNC vice chairman David Whelan said the council is working to draw up a flyer that shows all the free shuttle services available. Shaw's Providing Free Shuttle for Charlestown Residents

Customers can travel to the supermarket location in Somerville on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Charlestown residents have another way of getting groceries now that Johnnie’s Foodmaster has closed. Members of the Charlestown Neighborhood Council and others met Tuesday afternoon to finalize plans for a free shuttle offered through national grocery chain Shaw’s. Starting the week of Dec. 11, the shuttle will operate on Tuesdays and Fridays, bringing customers to the Shaw’s in Somerville’s Twin City Plaza. The bus will depart from the Bunker Hill Mall in Charlestown, picking up customers on Main Street near the entrance to the mall and by CVS Pharmacy. Charlestown's Generosity Evident in Response to Johnnie's Closure

Local residents are teaming up to offer supermarket shuttle services to others in the area.

With Johnnies closing in less than a week, Charlestown will be without a supermarket until the construction of Whole Foods is completed. In such little notice, the Townie Association quickly responded to the issue by starting a petition for shuttle services. As president of the Townie Association, I would like to thank all those who signed our petition and for your support. When walking around Charlestown and knocking on doors to receive signatures, I witnessed the generosity of Charlestown come alive. Many neighborhoods do not have what we have: a community that cares.
