Local residents can receive free rides to Stop and Shop, Shaw's and Whole Foods markets in nearby communities.
It's been two months since Johnny's Foodmaster in Charlestown closed, and about the same amount of time since several supermarket companies began offering regular shuttle service from the Bunker Hill Mall area and other spots around town to their stores in nearby communities. Whole Foods Market, the company that is renovating the former Johnny's location with plans to reopen later this year, offers free service to its Beacon Hill market on Thursdays and Saturdays. Shaw's offers free service to its Somerville location on Tuesdays and Fridays, while Stop and Shop brings Charlestown customers to its Medford store on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Here's a look at the free service schedule for the next few days: Shuttle to Whole Foods (Beacon Hill) Shuttle to Stop and Shop (Medford) No service offered. The Charlestown Neighborhood Council is distributing a complete list of transportation options available to local residents.
[UPDATE Friday, 6:53 a.m.] Johnnie's Foodmaster may be closed, but there are plenty of places nearby where Charlestown residents can go for food and other staples. And three supermarket companies are helping residents get there by offering free weekly shuttle services. Shuttles include: Most shuttles pick customers up in the Bunker Hill Mall, near the now closed Johnnie's Foodmaster building—which is set to reopen as a Whole Foods sometime next year. Customers can travel to the supermarket location in Somerville on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Charlestown residents have another way of getting groceries now that Johnnie’s Foodmaster has closed. Members of the Charlestown Neighborhood Council and others met Tuesday afternoon to finalize plans for a free shuttle offered through national grocery chain Shaw’s. Starting the week of Dec. 11, the shuttle will operate on Tuesdays and Fridays, bringing customers to the Shaw’s in Somerville’s Twin City Plaza. The bus will depart from the Bunker Hill Mall in Charlestown, picking up customers on Main Street near the entrance to the mall and by CVS Pharmacy. To leave an inner-city community like Charlestown with it's significant elderly, disabled and non-car-owning population without a grocery store for an entire calender year is disgusting. Wholefoods is the final nail in the de-gentrification coffin of Charlestown and the news ain't good for the future. more ›
