President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.
President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. Mike Capuano earned his eighth term in Congress with a win over Karla Romero.
With 18 percent of precincts reporting, the Associated Press has declared Democratic Congressman Mike Capuano the winner of the reconfigured Seventh Congressional District. Capuano, who is currently serving his seventh term representing the Eighth Congressional District, defeated Independent Karla Romero. "I am honored by the support that voters have shown in sending me back to Congress," Capuano said. "Our country is facing great challenges and I will continue fighting to make sure that the voices of my constituents are heard." Prior to his seven terms in congress, the Somerville native served as the mayor of his hometown. Capuano is currently on the House Transportation Committee and Financial Services Committee. A majority of voters in Massachusetts on Tuesday cast their ballot for Barack Obama, giving him the state's 11 Electoral votes.
Barack Obama won Massachusetts' 11 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Shortly after 8 p.m., the AP called Massachusetts for Obama, along with with six other east coast states and the District of Columbia. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Massachusetts. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections. The Boston Elections Department this morning announced that, as of 9 a.m., 58,854 ballots had been cast in polling locations across the city. The number represents 15.2% of the City’s registered voters. The City of Boston has more than the number of ballots required to satisfy each of the387,142 registered voters eligible to participate. Since September’s primary elections, the City has registered an additional 28,930 voters. Registered Democratic voters total 211,316; Republican voters total 25,903; unenrolled voters total 147,858; and Green-Rainbow and other designations total 2,065. During the 2008 presidential election, 236,525 ballots were cast out of a possible 380,881 registered voters. Boston has a total of 255 precincts and 153 …

Voters endured a chilly morning and decent sized lines to cast their ballot in Charlestown this morning. Bill Stone of Charlestown was standing outside the Harvard-Kent School at 50 Bunker Hill Street with his Scott Brown sign and his dog, Cali, dressed in a Scott Brown coat. Joe Dillion stood outside the Clarence R. Edwards Middle School at 28 Walker Street guiding people to gym located at the rear of the school. Dillion said the turnout was huge earlier and he predicts a 70 percent turnout. "I'm voting for Elizabeth Warren because Scott Brown voted against equal pay for women," Dillion said. "He struck out there with me." Patch will be posting more photos and election results as the day goes on.
