Warren Tavern Voted Best Grad Party Venue

Navy Yard Bistro finishes second, Olives third.

This week’s Reader’s Choice poll told us two things: 1) Charlestown is far more interested in hair salons than graduation parties, and 2) The Warren Tavern continues to win most restaurant-themed “Best Of” contests in town. With just 40 votes cast across 14 candidates, The Warren Tavern captured the most with 9. Readers in the past have complimented the restaurant’s food, service and history, but let’s turn our attention to the runners up. Another perennial poll leader, The Navy Yard Bistro and Wine Bar, came in second, but the third place finisher might be something of a surprise: Olives. Just about a month after reopening, the long-shuttered restaurant whose owner has not always been loved by the community has worked its way back into …

Foodmaster Tops Convenience/Grocery List

Readers chose Foodmaster as the best grocery or convenience store in Charlestown for this week's Best of Patch Reader's Choice award.

We asked you this week to vote for your favorite grocery or convenience store, and the winner should surprise no one. The Foodmaster on Austin Street (I know it will forever by Johnnie’s, but ‘Foodmaster’ is its official name) won with a solid 62 percent of the vote. Bob Deveaux, the store manager, said he was excited by the news. “I’d like to thank our loyal customers,” he said. I really appreciate it, That’s awesome.” Boston Organics came in a distant second with 11 percent of the vote, and we should give a nod to the Market Basket in Chelsea, even though it’s not in town. Reader Bette Task said she was a loyal customer there, and said it had the “best selection at the lowest prices anywhere.”

I spent over six years bouncing around this state and shopping for groceries at every major chain from Shaws- Hannafords, Market Basket- Stop-N-Shop and I can honestly say that Johnnies Foodmaster has the POOREST selection, HIGHEST prices and the WORST quality of foods (as a whole) than any other chain grocery store. Facts are facts.   more ›

Top Brunches: Warren Tavern, Max and Dylan's

Warrent Tavern and Max and Dylan's tie on votes, but comments tip the scales.

If you want to take your mom for a Mother’s Day brunch in Charlestown, your best bet is either The Warren Tavern or Max and Dylan’s according to this week’s poll. While both restaurants captured an identical number of votes, the comments tipped the scales in Warren Tavern’s favor. A reader named James Brittain said he had an “excellent” experience at The Warren Tavern on Father’s Day, and “can’t wait to visit again.” Max and Dylan’s also picked up a couple of comments, but they were less flattering. Come back next week when we ask you about your favorite local staycation destinations.

Max and Dylan's huh? The last few times my wife and I have been there the service was awful. About a month ago we walked in, got a table in the bar area (not too crowded), sat for 15 minutes waiting for anyone to help us, got up and walked out. Do yourself a favor, head elsewhere. Great location, ok food, sorry service.   more ›

Bunker Hill Tops Raspberry Bouquet, Both Solid

Winner says it's good to see positive attention paid to both businesses.

If you’re looking for the best florist in Charlestown, well, both are good options, according to this week’s winner. “It was great to see such nice comments that people feel warmly about each of our businesses,” said Joe Shadroui, owner of Bunker Hill Florist. Shadroui’s business took 67 percent of the vote in this week’s poll, coming out over Raspberry Bouquet, but Shadroui said that may have had a lot to do with his history in town. Bunker Hill Florist has been in business for three decades, making Raspberry Bouquet the relative newcomer. “I think that Lauren [at Raspberry Bouquet] does a great job,” Shadroui said. “We have a good relationship with each other.” The two businesses sometimes help each other out, he said; when one of the …
