Boston students aren’t the only ones who get to sleep in this morning, the first day of their April vacation. It’s also Patriots' Day, so many state, county and town employees have the day off as well, as Massachusetts commemorates the official start to the Revolutionary War (the opening battle of which began on April 19, 1775). Whether you’re looking to get some errands done with the day off or it’s business as usual, you may be wondering how the state holiday will affect your schedule. Boston City Hall, banks and post offices will be closed for the holiday.
Today is Presidents Day, a U.S. holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February in honor of all American presidents—in particular, two who were born in February, George Washington (Feb. 22) and Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12). The holiday was originally created in 1885 in honor of the nation's first president, George Washington, and was celebrated every year on his actual birthday, according to history.com. In 1971, the holiday was changed to Presidents Day. Today, Presidents Day is considered by many to be a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, past and present, although some still refer to the day as "Washington's Birthday."
