Around 200 Charlestown residents turned out for a candlelight ceremony Wednesday night honoring the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.
The people of Charlestown honored their city and remembered the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing on Wednesday in Eden Park with candles, prayer and music, including a version of “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes. “We’re all here and we’re going to get through this,” Townie Association member and Charlestown resident Sean Boyle told the crowd of several hundred. “They messed with the wrong city. It’s Boston. You know what I mean—we’re tough. We’re all proud to be American; we all live here in the birthplace of freedom, right where it all started.” The event was organized quickly by the Townie Association, the Charlestown Substance Abuse Coalition and Charlestown Against Drugs and included prayers by Father Dan Mahoney of St. Francis de …

With Johnnies closing in less than a week, Charlestown will be without a supermarket until the construction of Whole Foods is completed. In such little notice, the Townie Association quickly responded to the issue by starting a petition for shuttle services. As president of the Townie Association, I would like to thank all those who signed our petition and for your support. When walking around Charlestown and knocking on doors to receive signatures, I witnessed the generosity of Charlestown come alive. Many neighborhoods do not have what we have: a community that cares. To hear the good news of neighbors quickly starting their own shuttle service or receiving emails and phone calls from neighbors offering their time to drive people to …

The Townie Association hosted their first annual Halloween Bash fundraiser at the Somerville City Club on Friday, Oct. 19. Arriving in costumes, guests enjoyed a spooktacular evening. There were scrumptious treats, scary tricks, and magical decorations. Putting a spell on everyone, DJ Dennis Taylor generously provided the music. Costume contest winners were as follows: It was amazing to see so much kindness and from the community—both the residents and business. We are grateful to be part of such a supportive neighborhood. The Halloween Bash was truly a success. Proceeds from the event benefitted the Bunker Hill Day Parade. Special thanks to the many Charlestown businesses that generously donated raffle items, gift baskets, and gift …

Today's photo comes from Sean Boyle, who had this to say about it: "Townie Association raising money outside Johnnies this past weekend for their campaign—"Paint the Town: Red White & Blue," which is an effort to decorate the Parade Route and encourage business owners/Charlestown residents to decorate their property for the parade." --- Would you like to participate in our Photo of the Day feature? E-mail your photo to mattc@patch.com (or text it to 781.715.3584 or upload it to our community gallery), and try to include a little bit of an explanation, if possible. Photo of the Day is by readers, for readers, and we will publish submissions as fast as we can.

I was just told this was on here-- and I just wanted to say how impressed I was to see my fellow townies there to support the victims of the Boston Marathon Bombings. I was at ground zero when the bombs went off on the medical sweep bus and as we picked up the remaining runners, terrified, cold, scared and hungry getting them to safety and helping at the shelters in Newton I had a sense of Pride …   more ›
