The Boston City Council passed an ordinance on Wednesday to create mandatory concussion safety training for permitted organizations on all Boston playing fields, rinks and leagues.
If an independent athletic group wants to use Boston's facilities, they'll have to first provide concussion safety training to all coaches, players, referees, trainers and volunteers. A new ordinance makes the training a prerequisite for a permit to use city-owned facilities. The Boston City Council passed te ordinance at its Wednesday meeting. The ordinance, sponsored by Council President Stephen Murphy, was previously discussed in a March 14 public hearing and two working council committee sessions. The two main points of the ordinance "concerns the procedures organizations should follow in the event of a concussive injury." Tuesday, Jan. 25: Charlestown defeats Fenway 104-24 In their largest win of the season, the Townies defeated Fenway High School in a dominating fashion. Akosa Maduegbunam had 21 points and 10 rebounds while Jamal Ellison and Michael Hodges both had 15 and 14 points, respectively. Saturday, Jan. 29: Townies Upset #1 ranked St. John's 72-56 This highly anticipated match-up ended in Charlestown's favor as Maduegbunam and Rony Fernandes combined for 45 points and 13 rebounds over St. John's Pat Connaughton, who had 29 points. Emily McCavanagh, a Charlestown resident and PR/ Marketing rep-turned-fitness-guru, can get you in the best shape of your life with one of her many F.I.T. classes.
Emily McCavanagh was out for a run on the day when she decided she want to change career paths from public relations and marketing to helping people improve their lives through fitness. "I had an epiphany and I was just over it," said McCavanagh. "Fitness has always been a huge part of my life. I was a gymnast and I went on to play field hockey and lacrosse in college. I think everyone should find something they love to do and do it everyday. Fitness should be fun." In November of 2009, she launched F.I.T. The high school boys' varsity team improved their record to 10-1 over the weekend afternoon with an 88-55 win over Rhode Island's Mount Pleasant High School.
The Charlestown High School Boys' Varsity Basketball Team continued their hot streak Saturday afternoon by defeating Rhode Island's Mount Pleasant 88-55. The win improves the Townies' overall record to 10-1 and they still sit atop the Boston City North League. Akosa Maduegbunam and Omar Orriols led their team with 22 and 18 points, respectively. Both players also executed impressive slam dunks. The first half was plagued by three-second violations and unfinished shots. Still, the Townies were able to hold a 16-point lead heading into halftime. The CHS Townies Boys' basketball team went 2-0 in their contests last week defeating both Madison Park and Mount Pleasant High Schools. On Thursday, Akosa Maduegbunam had 17 points and 8 rebounds while Rony Fernandes went 3-3 for three-pointers and had 13 points in the Townies' 64-46 win over Madison Park. On Saturday, the Townies hosted Rhode Island's Mount Pleasant High School. Once again, Maduegbunam put up big numbers with 22 points in Charlestown's 88-55 win. Omar Orriols also notched 18 points. The Charlestown High School boys' basketball team defeated Rhode Island's Hope High School in a dominating fashion Saturday afternoon beating their opponents by 50 points. With a final score of 93-43, the win improves the Townies' record to 6-1 and also ranks them at No. 18 in the Top 20 in the Boston Globe's statewide poll. The junior class shined as four players notched over 10 points apiece: Akosa Maduegnunam led the Townies with 16 points and 5 assists, followed by teammates Iser Barnes (14 points, 7 rebounds), Tyrik Jackson (12 points, 15 rebounds) and Rony Fernandes (14 points, 11 assists).
