Spaulding Hubway Station Opens

The 18-dock bike share pad is the third in Charlestown.

With parking a pressing issue in the Charlestown Navy Yard, residents may be happy to know there is a new commuting option.  A new Hubway bike share station with 18 docks opened this week outside the recently completed Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital at 300 First Ave. It marks the third Hubway station in Charlestown—the neighborhood already has one at Warren and Chelsea streets and another at Main and Austin streets. Plans are also underway to install a fourth station at Charlestown's Hayes Square. That station is expected to be operational by September, according to Nicole Freedman, director of Boston Bikes. The Spaulding station was built as part of an agreement with the community to mitigate the impact of the new hospital on the …

Special Homecoming for Marathon Bombing Survivor

Roseann Sdoia was released from Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital on Tuesday after undergoing treatment for injuries sustained during the April 15 explosions, including the loss of her right leg.

Wearing a white T-shirt with the words “Roseann Strong” in bright orange letters, Boston Marathon bombing survivor Roseann Sdoia made her way home Tuesday morning, after a grand send-off at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital that included a three-engine escort from the Boston Fire Department. The milestone came almost exactly one month after the April 15 explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon that killed three and injured more than 260 people. Sdoia had attended that day’s Red Sox game at Fenway Park and headed over to Copley Square to watch the rest of the marathon when she was caught up in one of the two explosions. On Tuesday, Sdoia spoke to reporters in the lobby of the new Spaulding Hospital in the Charlestown Navy Yard…

Brothers Injured in Bombing Recovering Together at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital

Paul and JP Norden, who both lost limbs in the Boston Marathon explosions, spoke Monday about the support they've received, the healing process and what's next.

Brothers JP and Paul Norden reunited last Friday at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, where they are both undergoing care for injuries sustained in the April 15 Boston Marathon bombings. Used to seeing each other several times a day before the explosion that left them both without one leg, the brothers were glad for the reunion, though it will be short-lived—Paul is expected to be released from Spaulding soon for out-patient care, while JP will remain behind. “I can’t even describe…” Paul, 31, said when asked what it was like to be back with his brother. “I didn’t see him for 14 days, and it was so tough. I see him every day of my life. So it’s just amazing to be back to normal.” JP, 33, said of their reunion: “It’s the best thing ever.” …

Charlestown Health Study Results Revealed

Substance abuse, education and access to care were among the health priorities identified in Charlestown during an assessment led by MGH and Spaulding hospitals.

After a year and a half of forums, surveys and focus groups, organizers of the Charlestown Community Health Assessment revealed study results on Thursday, May 2 and asked local residents to help turn that data into meaningful steps forward in improving the health of all Charlestown residents. Led by Massachusetts General Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, the assessment aimed to provide an “honest and objective description of [the] community’s health status, assets and unmet needs” and involved the collaboration of people in a variety of areas, from healthcare to education, social services, government and criminal justice. The project also comes with considerable funding over the next five years, to help further the goals …

New Spaulding Rehab Hospital Welcomes Patients

The recently completed facility in the Charlestown Navy Yard has begun regular operations.

The new Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in the Charlestown Navy Yard welcomed its first patients over the weekend, as staff members coordinated to move more than 100 people from the hospital’s Nashua Street location to their new temporary residence across the river. Among the first to settle into the new building—the first, actually, as he was sure to point out to a reporter from the Boston Globe—was Randy Clukey, a 53-year-old builder from Maine who was injured in a snowmobile accident in February. Located at the corner of 16th Street and First Avenue, the new $220 million, 300,000 sq. ft. medical facility is a significant upgrade from Spaulding Rehabilitation Network’s aging building on Nashua Street and offers the latest technology …

'We Have Never Needed Them More': Boston Celebrates Opening of New Rehabilitation Hospital

Mayor Tom Menino and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital officials talked of the facility's importance following the Boston Marathon bombings.

At the grand opening of a new, state-of-the-art facility where clinicians will help people adapt to amputations and other traumatic injuries, Boston Mayor Tom Menino and others celebrated the strength of the city of Boston and the strength of the human spirit Saturday night. Benefactors, hospital staff and city officials gathered Saturday night at a tent set up outside the new nine-story Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Since its founding in 1970, Spaulding has provided in- and out-patient services for people recovering from a range of issues, including spinal cord and brain injuries, strokes, amputations and burns. Some of the hospital’s clinicians were waiting at the finish line when the two bombs went off …

Spaulding To Host 'Boston Strong' Celebration Tonight

The rehabilitation hospital will mark the opening of its new location in the Charlestown Navy Yard—and the spirit of the city—with a special event for staff and officials.

Though a community open house on Sunday was postponed Friday in the midst of a citywide lockdown and manhunt for suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing, Spaulding Rehabilitation Center will go ahead with other plans to celebrate its grand opening in the Charlestown Navy Yard this weekend. Spaulding representatives had planned to hold a small thank you gala for donors, staff and local and state officials Friday night, but the event was canceled. Following Friday’s arrest, an even bigger celebration has been organized for tonight, with a performance by the Boston Pops, speaker Mayor Tom Menino and a “rousing sing-a-long” of “Sweet Caroline”—a special nod to the city’s “Boston Strong” spirit. “I’ve never been more proud to be part of Boston …

Spaulding Grand Opening Postponed

The community celebration welcoming the rehabilitation hospital to the Charlestown Navy Yard has been delayed because of the citywide lockdown and manhunt for the suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing.

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital's grand opening, scheduled for Sunday, April 21 in the Charlestown Navy Yard, has been postponed in light of recent events. Spaulding officials announced on Friday afternoon that the event had been postponed and would be rescheduled at a later date. Below is the full announcement from Spaulding spokeswoman Rebecca Kaiser: ------ Dear Friends and Neighbors: As we watch the events of the past 24 hours unfold, Spaulding has decided that the most prudent decision is to cancel this Sunday’s Community Open House and Health Care. We are hopeful to reschedule this event at a later time. Although we are not certain whether, how or when we will be able to celebrate the momentous occasion of the opening of the new …

Navy Yard Getting New Hubway Station, Shuttle

Spaulding Rehabilitation Network will be offering an "express" bus line to the new hospital and is sponsoring a nearby bike share station.

The Charlestown Navy Yard will be getting a new Hubway station and a new bus shuttle thanks to an agreement with Spaulding Rehabilitation Network. The new public transit options are part of the nonprofit organization's efforts to mitigate the impact of the new Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital on the surrounding neighborhood and were announced at a community meeting held Monday, Feb. 25. “We heard the concerns from residents about what traffic was going to look like coming into the hospital with employees in the morning, patients and visitors,” Spaulding spokeswoman Rebecca Kaiser said. The resulting transportation plan seeks to minimize the hospital’s impact on the community and add new benefits that everyone can take advantage of, Kaiser…
