Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Charlestown. Next week is a busy one for local businesses, with the pre-Thanksgiving rush—people getting new clothes, new haircuts and stocking up on food, wine and other purchases—followed by the official kick-off to the holiday shopping season, Black Friday, and the 21st-century creation, Cyber Monday, when online companies offer special deals to entice the first round of holiday spenders. Located in the old Crosby Steam Gauge & Valve Co. building on Roland Street, which dates back to 1888, the new home furnishings store Pura Vida is itself a reclaiming of something old, made new again. Shop owner Daren Lechner has created an interesting showroom on the building’s third floor—a series of vignettes designed to draw in the eye, appeal to the senses and give the shopper a truly original experience. The shop name, “Pura Vida,” is a Costa Rican phrase that means “pure life," and Lechner tries to carry that natural feel throughout his business. Thanksgiving isn't just a day of giving thanks, it's also the last day before the holiday shopping season starts with a bang on with early openings and one-day-only deals on Black Friday.
