Does the Navy Yard Need a New Fountain?

The BRA is proposing replacing the Shipyard Park feature with a kid-friendly splash pad. But does the community want it?

At the end of last summer, the Boston Redevelopment Authority fenced off the water fountain in the Charlestown Navy Yard's Shipyard Park in an attempt to keep children from playing there. But for area residents, many who have used the fountain as a way to cool off on hot summer days for more than 30 years, the fence was an outrage. To help ease the neighborhood's concerns, the BRA developed plans to install a new water play area for kids in the Navy Yard, and on Tuesday officials held a public meeting where they revealed those plans—a new kid-friendly "splash pad" to be located near Navy Yard's existing playground.
