The Boston city councilor says the neighborhood's side streets got some attention on Monday but that there is still a lot of work to be done.
Though there was a delay in getting Charlestown’s side streets plowed after the weekend snowstorm, the neighborhood was looking much better by Monday afternoon, District 1 City Councilor Sal LaMattina said. “Today they’re out there full swing and the neighborhood looks good. We still have major snow piles on Main Street and Bunker Hill Street, and those need to be repaired. Hopefully the city won’t lift the parking ban until they remove some of those piles of snow,” LaMattina said. The Charlestown Neighborhood Council also heard from City Councillor Sal LaMattina and Charlestown High School Headmaster William Thompson at their meeting on Jan. 8.
The Charlestown Neighborhood Council’s first meeting of 2013 was a busy one, as the council welcomed two new members, heard from District 1 City Councillor Sal LaMattina and covered a range of topics, from notification of film shoots in the area to an update on the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital project. New council member Amanda Reinfeld took her seat after being chosen in November to serve in one of the council’s seven at-large seats. In addition, the Charlestown Preservation Society sent a new member to replace outgoing representative Lee Braun. Mal Watlington took over the CPS seat. Watlington lives on Main Street, is also a member of the Charlestown Chamber of Commerce and has experience in city management from Wilmington, NC. The …

Organizers continue efforts to revive an old Bunker Hill Day tradition.
Efforts to revive the long-dormant Charlestown carnival have hit a snag: organizers haven’t found a location where they can hold the event. Neighborhood Councilor Bill Galvin told the assembly Tuesday that he has yet to schedule a public hearing on the proposed event because he can’t do so until lead organizer Sean Boyle tells Galvin where the event will be. Boyle said Tuesday that he originally wanted to hold the event at The Neck, but the city’s Parks and Recreations department doesn’t allow carnivals in city parks. Right now, Galvin said, the group doesn’t have another location and “there’s only so many locations in Charlestown that are big enough.” The group discussed using land at Bunker Hill Community College, but a motorcycle group …
