The funds are available to two high school seniors living in Charlestown.
A consortium of neighborhood affiliates in Partners HealthCare will award two scholarships of $3,000 each to high school seniors from Charlestown who will be pursuing a program of study that will lead to a health career at the associate or bachelor degree level. Eligible students for the Charlestown Health Care Merit Scholarship must have lived in Charlestown for at least two years, be a first-year, first-degree student who will attend college in fall 2013 and have a cumulative high school GPA of 2.75 or higher. Applicants must demonstrate they are pursuing a career in nursing, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy or other health sciences professions. Hospital reps hope to have a temporary certificate of occupancy by today.
Plans to relocate Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital to the Charlestown Navy Yard are moving right along, with developers expecting to have a temporary certificate of occupancy in hand today. Rebecca Kaiser, director of government and community relations for Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, shared an update on the project with the Charlestown Neighborhood Association at their Tuesday, Jan. 8 meeting. “Construction is 99 percent complete,” Kaiser told the council. “We’re hopeful to have the temporary certificate of occupancy by this Friday and then the official certificate of occupancy by Jan. 18.” The $220 million project involves construction of a new 300,000 sq. ft. medical facility at the corner of 16th Street and First Avenue in …

Two Charlestown residents have been named as recipients of the 2011 Partners Health Care Merit Scholarship. Catherine Taglilatela, a life-long resident who is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Athletic Training at Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire, was awarded a $3,500 scholarship. Derek Bieringer, is working towards his associate's degree in Cardiac Sonography at Bunker Hill Community College and recently moved to the neighborhood. He was awarded a $2,500 scholarship. The scholarships, which have been awarded for eight years, are the result of a collaboration between three Partners HealthCare affiliates -- MGH Institute of Health Professions, MGH Charlestown Health Center, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
