Boston Schools Open, No Parking Ban in Effect

City officials urge caution during the remainder of Friday's winter storm.

[UPDATED Friday, March 8, 10:05 a.m.] Boston Public Schools remain open Friday morning, though Mayor Thomas Menino is urging residents to use caution and take advantage of public transportation as much as possible for their morning commute in light of the ongoing winter storm. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for eastern Massachusetts until about 1 p.m. Friday. The weather advisory calls for heavy, wet snow with an accumulation of 6-10 inches as well as strong wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour.  As of 8 a.m., the city had not issued a snow emergency or parking ban; regular parking rules remain in effect. UPDATE, 10 a.m. City crews will collect trash and recycling on the normal Friday schedule. Crews may be …

Parking Ban Lifts at 6 p.m.; Schools To Open Wednesday

After four days, Boston's snow emergency will expire Tuesday evening.

Boston officials announced on Tuesday afternoon that because of recent strides made in snow removal from city streets, the snow emergency parking ban will be lifted at 6 p.m. Tuesday night. “Our snow removal teams did great work throughout the night last night,” Mayor Thomas Menino said. “Our crews will be out there all day and again tonight as we continue to widen roads, make our schools safe for students, and respond to residents’ concerns about residential areas.” Those who parked their cars in garages during the snow emergency have until 8 p.m. to move them before reduced rates expire.  The city also announced certain streets will continue to be specified as "no parking" while crews continue to remove snow. The mayor also announced on …

Should Charlestown Residents 'Hold' Parking Spots?

Parking is already difficult in the neighborhood, much less without two feet of snow on the ground.

In the wake of the Blizzard of 2013, parking has become unbelievably difficult between the city's parking ban, the shrinking of streets to one-lane roads, and the 10-or-more-foot high and five-foot deep piles of snow that line the streets. Bostonians all know of the tradition in the city that when you shovel out a parking spot, you can "hold" that parking spot with a chair, trash barrel or other object for up to 48 hours after the parking ban ends.  Proponents say that the ban encourages people to do a good job clearing out their spot, knowing their hard work won't go to waste as soon as they move their car. Opponents say that you can't claim a parking spot as "yours" just because you parked there before the blizzard.  What's your personal…

Boston Emergency Parking Ban Still in Effect

The city's snow emergency is still on until Public Works crews can adequately clear the roadways.

Boston's parking ban on major roads throughout the city will remain in effect, the mayor announced on Saturday afternoon.  “We’re halfway there,” Mayor Thomas Menino said. “Our crews have been out there, non-stop, and our residents have listened to the early warnings to stay home and stay off the roads. We’re not out of the woods yet. Right now, it’s critical that residents continue to work with us and let the crews have full access to the streets.” Click here for a list of Charlestown streets banned during a snow emergency. City officials said public works crews are out in full force, but it will take significant time, even after the snow stops this afternoon, to clear every roadway. It is vital that residents continue to stay off the …

I am aware of the differences between rural New Hampshire and inner City Boston. My point was that I find it ridiculous that the City of Boston puts certain expectations on tax paying residents, some of which come with prison sentences, but then slacks on clearing streets. I am also aware that those driving the plows are working very hard. It's the administration that is the problem. I never …   more ›
