Toy Story 3 will be screened tonight at Peter Looney Park, ending this season's summer movie nights.
Today is Wednesday, August 24. Here are five things you need to know today. 1. Bring the kids, some blankets, lawn chairs and snacks and catch the last outdoor movie night in Charlestown for the season. Toy Story 3 will be screened tonight at sunset in Peter Looney Park (which used to be the Union Street Playground). 2. Have you seen this bike? It went missing from the Navy Yard this week and there's a $200 reward attached to it. I caught this on Twitter, so click here to get in touch with the sad owner. 3. The DCR extended the season for city pools, spray decks and wading areas through Labor Day "in light of late school openings and anticipated warm weather over the next several days." You can still hit up the Bunker or the wading pool in…

There are two free events to get you outside and enjoying the neighborhood tonight.
Today is Wednesday, Aug. 17. Here are five things you need to know today. 1. There are two fabulous outdoor events scheduled tonight in Charlestown -- and if you time it right, you can get to both. First, the City Square summer concert series is wrapping up the season with Irie Roots, a steel drum band. They'll be performing live (and for free) in the park from 5:30 to 7 p.m. 2. And just a short walk away at Eden Street Playground, Charlestown Against Drugs is hosting a "summer in the city" family cookout. There will be burgers and dogs, some street hockey and basketball games and, as the sun sets, an outdoor movie: Kung Fu Panda. The Eden Street party runs from 5 to 10 p.m. It's also free and open to everyone in the neighborhood. 3. The …

Charlestown Against Drugs is screening "A Bug's Life" at St. Catherine's.
Today is Wednesday, Aug. 10. Here are five things you need to know today. 1. Charlestown Against Drugs is sponsoring a free outdoor movie tonight. They'll be screening A Bug's Life outside of St. Catherine's. Bring chairs and snacks. The movie will start at dusk. 2. Let me qualify that -- the movie will be screened if the weather holds out. Forecast calls for isolated thunderstorms today, especially after 6 p.m. It'll be muggy, warm and overcast otherwise. High around 80. 3. Charlestown's got some talented gardeners. That's no secret. But the mayor's office has recently recognized a few of them. Three residents and a community organization (Gardens for Charlestown) placed in this year's citywide gardening contest. Read more about who won. …

A summer concert turned violent downtown. Plus, a rainy soggy start to the week.
Today is Monday, August 8. Here are five things you need to know today. 1. Another summer weekend in the city erupted in violence. To clarify -- it was nowhere near as awful as the reports that came in over the July 4th weekend, but apparently there were rolling fights downtown and on the T this past Saturday night after a fight broke out on City Hall plaza. Universal Hub's even posted some videos of what this looked like. Boston, what's going on? 2. On a much lighter note, there's another outdoor movie night scheduled this week. A Bug's Life will be screening at 7:30 p.m. at St. Catherine's as part of Charlestown Against Drugs' "Off the Wall" series. 3. Oh yes, and I'm back from vacation -- and very happily married now. If things are a …

A summer concert, a free outdoor movie and family yoga in the park.
Today is Wednesday, July 20. Here are five things you need to know today. 1. It's a good day for stretching. It's a great day to be outside. Local yoga guru (and Patch columnist) Karen Fabian will be leading a free family-yoga class today at noon at City Square Park. 2. Here's another way to get out today: Charlestown Against Drugs, along with a handful of other organizations, is hosting a free outdoor movie night this evening at the Training Field. They'll be screening the Pixar movie Monsters, Inc. Bring your own chairs or blankets and snacks. The movie starts around dusk. 3. And if you time it right, you might also be able to get in a little time at the free summer concert tonight at City Square Park. The Dirty Water Band is …

There will be a fre screening of Monsters, Inc. on Wednesday, starting at dusk.
One of the best things about summer? Outdoor movies on a warm, clear night. On Wednesday, the neighborhood will have the opportunity to indulge in this seasonal treat with a screening of Monsters, Inc. at the Training Field. Bring your own chairs or blankets and arrive just before dusk. As soon as its dark, the movie will start. Here's a description of Monsters, Inc. (an animated Pixar movie) from the Internet Movie Database: Monsters generate their city's power by scaring children, but they are terribly afraid themselves of being contaminated by children, so when one enters Monstropolis, top scarer Sulley finds his world disrupted. This free event is sponsored by Charlestown Against Drugs, the local Boston Police District, Boston …

I agree that utilizing wide open spaces for entertainment is great (in this case City Hall Plaza), but I agree with Townie Girl that Menino is clueless most of the time. Whenever there is a 'free' event (read:open to the public) there is bound to be trouble. This administration has NEVER been tough on crime anyway.   more ›
