Mass. State Police: Don't Panic, But Drive Slowly

The department issued some driving tips for Monday evening's anticipated icy commute.

Massachusetts State Police are advising drivers to go slowly but not to panic about the forecasted icy commute on Monday evening. "Once again, Massachusetts is gearing up for another snow storm. While this coming storm is not expected to bring heavy accumulation, the timing is less than ideal as it's expected to make its way across the Commonwealth during peak afternoon travel times," State Police said in a press release. "This can cause major delays in traffic, accidents and other headaches making the daily commute stressful." State Police offered the following tips: 1. Don’t panic. "It's New England, and we’ve been here before," officials stated. "Remember to be patient with those operators with less skill driving in these expected …

State Police are investigating the incident, which occurred at around 2:20 p.m., as a 'non-homicide,' according to reports.

Massachusetts State Police are investigating the sudden death of a man they believe jumped off the Tobin Bridge on Thursday afternoon. "Uniformed State Police units were notified at about 2:20 [p.m.] that the deceased pulled over on the Charlestown side of the bridge and jumped over the railing," Jake Wark, press secretary for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, said in an email briefing. Police believe the man leaped from the southbound lane of the Tobin Bridge, Wark said. State Police assigned to Troop E, along with members of the Boston Fire Department and Boston EMS, responded to the call. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.  The bridge had been cleared by the time of the briefing, about 4 p.m. "The evidence and …

Police: Stop Wearing Earbuds While Driving

State police and transportation officials warn against wearing headphones while on the road, adding to the list of driving distractions.

In some states, drivers can be issued a ticket for talking on a cell phone behind the wheel. Texting and driving is now illegal in Massachusetts. State Police want to remind Massachusetts drivers that listening to headphones is illegal as well. State Police say more drivers are using hands free technology to communicate while driving, and while wearing one earpiece is allowable under the law, wearing two is not. “Some operators have begun to use their headsets to listen to music, audio books, and other media while driving,” state police said in a Tuesday advisory. “Frankly, there is no legitimate reason for an operator to be wearing both headphones while driving.” Police say the use of earbud headphones while driving cuts off one of the “…

Increased patrols this week will be cracking down on impaired/drunk driving, texting while driving and seatbelt law violations, among other things. "We aren't trying to discourage people from going out and enjoying themselves," Massachusetts State Police Col. Timothy P. Alben said. "We just want to make sure they …
