As of 5 a.m., the National Weather Service Hurricane Center has Sandy is about 385 miles south, southeast of New York City. The storm is traveling at approximately 15 mph toward the north. It is expected to turn northwest today, then turn toward the west-northwest tonight. The center of Sandy will move over the coast of the mid-atlantic states in the evening hours. According to reports, Sandy is a hybrid storm, meaning it is a huge Nor’easter with a hurricane in the middle. The storm is currently measuring 900 miles wide, making it the second largest storm on record. Patrick is urging communities to close schools Monday and asking residents to stay off the roads, and says coastal communities may need to be evacuated.
As Hurricane Sandy barrels toward the East Coast, Gov. Deval Patrick held another press conference Sunday afternoon to update the public about Hurricane Sandy, urging residents to stay off the roads and asked communities to close schools. "Soon the entire commonwealth will feel the effects of the hurricane," Patrick said. The National Weather Service reports that New England will likely see damaging winds, major flooding and beach erosion. "To help keep the roads clear for emergency personnel and to keep people safe from flying limbs and debris or from down power lines, I am first of all requesting all schools including colleges and early education programs to close Monday, for the safety of students and employees alike," Patrick said. …
All non-essential city employees are being asked to stay home.
Boston Public Schools will be closed Monday due to extreme weather expected due to Hurricane Sandy. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has also asked that all non-essential city employees should stay at home. “After assessing the most updated report from the National Weather Service, and out of concern for the safety of Boston residents, Boston Public Schools will be closed Monday and only essential personnel will report to City Hall,” said Menino via press release. “I urge Boston employers to assist the city in keeping residents safe, and allow employees to work from home.”
National Hurricane Center forecasters caution the public to not underestimate Hurricane Sandy based on its storm category or projections on where it will come ashore.
Federal emergency management and weather officials said Sunday that the time for preparing for Hurricane Sandy is rapidly coming to an end. "The time for preparing and talking is about over," said Craig Fugate, adminstrator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. People need to be acting about now." By Monday storm expected to reintensify to possible nor'easter.
Update, 8:20 a.m. Saturday: According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), Sandy has been upgraded again to a hurricane, just hours after being downgraded to a tropical storm. In its 8 a.m. bulletin, the NOAA reported an Air Force aircraft found hurricane-strength winds again. Earlier, in its 5 a.m. bulletin, the NOAA issued warnings and watches to the Southeastern parts of the country, including Florida, but said those up the Eastern seaboard need to prepare for its impact. The storm is moving North-Northeast at 10 mph and an increase in intensity and speed possible tonight and Sunday, according to the NOAA. Sandy is currently considered to be "very large," with winds extending as far as 450 miles from its center. …

Forecasting models are split, with some saying the powerful storm will blow out to sea, while others think it'll smack into New England as a tropical storm or depression.
The National Hurricane Center has upgraded Sandy from a tropical storm to hurricane with sustained wind speeds of 80 miles per hour. The storm, bearing down on Jamaica at a pokey 14 miles per hour, is expected to hug the east coast. What happens after that, however, is anyone's guess. At this time of year, storms like Sandy usually track out to sea well before they reach New England.
