British PM Visits Gov. Patrick, Bombing Memorial

Several news outlets reported on David Cameron's visit to Boston this week.

Great Britain Prime Minister David Cameron is spending time this week in Boston to offer his condolences to Gov. Deval Patrick on the Boston Marathon bombings and discuss the lessons learned from the tragedy, according to WCVB.com. The news station reported that Cameron arrived in Boston on Monday and went into a private meeting with Patrick. While Cameron didn't discuss the meeting topic afterward with reporters, WCVB reported that Patrick said the meeting "was great." Early Tuesday morning, Cameron and Patrick visited the makeshift Boston Marathon bombing memorial in Copley Square, according to an Associated Press report on WBUR.com. Patrick: We Need to Increase Income Tax to Invest in Our Future

Tell us: do you think we need to increase taxes to strengthen education and transportation?

In his State of the Commonwealth address Wednesday night, Gov. Deval Patrick proposed raising the state's income tax by 1 percentage point and lowering the sales tax to pay for $2 billion in transportation improvements and early childhood education programs.  "There is no good time to raise taxes. I know how tough the times have been on the people and families of the Commonwealth.  And though the worst of the recession is over, many, many families still face tough decisions and have deep anxiety about the future. Boston Public Schools to Share in $1 Million Statewide Early Education Grant

The funded initiative works to streamline and strengthen early education.

Gov. Deval Patrick announced Friday that $1 million in grants will go toward coordinating partnerships between early learning and elementary education programs. Boston is one of the five communities receiving part of the funds.  The initiative, called “Pre-Kindergarten to Third Grade Alignment for Educational Success,” supports school districts and community-based early education and care providers in working together to streamline early education in Massachusetts in hopes of improving academic performance and closing achievement gaps.   This initiative is part of the four-year Massachusetts Early Learning Plan, funded by a $50 million federal grant won the state won in December 2011.    “Education is Massachusetts’ calling card around the…
