Tell Us About Your '26.2 Acts of Kindness'

A Charlestown woman recently launched her own version of a project designed to inspire and give back following the tragic events at the Boston Marathon.

A little bit of kindness goes a long way. That’s the basic idea behind Charlestown resident Stephanie Zanotti’s “26.2 Acts of Kindness” project—an effort to put some positivity back into the world after tragedy. And she’s hoping others will join her. “In the wake of the Newtown, CT tragedy, a kindness movement was started by Ann Curry [of the TODAY show] to do 26 acts of kindness for the 26 victims of Sandy Hook Elementary,” Zanotti said in an email. “This is Part 2. I am participating in 26 acts of kindness for the victims at the 26th mile of the Boston Marathon. Each mile of the route is dedicated to an act of kindness.” Since announcing her plans the week following the Boston Marathon bombings, Zanotti has been busy working on her acts …

Townie Santa Looking for Volunteer Elves

Volunteers needed to assist with food preparations, packing, delivery and clean-up on Dec. 23 for program that serves Charlestown elderly.

“Townie Santa” will be visiting many of Charlestown’s elderly, needy shut-ins on Sunday, Dec. 23, to deliver Christmas gifts, a gift certificate for groceries and a turkey dinner.  Santa may be any one of several dozen neighbors who will devote this morning to sharing the spirit of Christmas with those who have difficulty getting up and about. Delivery of the baskets will begin at noon from James W. Conway Bunker Hill Post 26, The American Legion, 23 Adams St. People with cars as well as those without are needed for this important task. Those who do not have their own transportation will be paired with a driver to assist with the delivery.  It takes just a short time commitment, and all deliveries are usually done by 1 p.m. In addition, a …

Trade Your Parking Tickets into Toys for Kids in Need

Trade in any Boston parking tickets you get between Nov. 29 and Dec. 1 for a toy instead of paying the fine.

It's certainly happened to all of us at one point or another. You've fed the meter, but you misjudged the time you'd need or you dilly-dallied inside your favorite store for too long. Or you realize you're fresh out of quarters, and you'll only be a few minutes anyways, and how can they really watch every meter in the city at the same time? And then on the way back to your car, you catch that woeful glimpse of bright orange on your windshield. Boom. You were caught. Now you owe the city $40.  But this weekend, there's a silver lining to those parking tickets. Through the annual Toys for Tickets program which runs in Boston from Thursday, Nov. 29 to Saturday, Dec. 1, any non-public safety parking ticket you receive you can get out of by …

On Thanksgiving Day, Bob and Carol Sweeney and a group of volunteers served up turkey, dressing and other holiday fare to the community at the J.W. Conway Bunker Hill Post 26 American Legion headquarters on Adams St. The annual Thanksgiving dinner has been a Charlestown tradition for more than 25 years.

Give Back This Holiday Season in Charlestown

In celebration of a new tradition, "Giving Tuesday," Patch offers this list of places that are accepting donations or volunteers.

First there was Black Friday, then there was Cyber Monday. Now there is a movement to create a new holiday called “Giving Tuesday.” Celebrated the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, the event encourages people to support nonprofit organizations through charitable activities at the start of the holiday season. Luckily, there are many ways you can help in Charlestown and around the city of Boston. Here are just a few opportunities to reach out this holiday season:  • The Animal Rescue League of Boston is accepting donations to help their cause of rescuing animals and preventing animal cruelty, abandonment and neglect. Buy an ornament in honor of your pet for their holiday tree or give directly at www.arlboston.org/donate.  • Several places around …

Drop off new, unwrapped children's items at the union hall on Main Street.

Teamsters Local 25 in Charlestown will once again serve as a collection point for the U.S. Marine Corps' annual Toys for Tots holiday campaign. “We’re proud to partner with the U.S. Marines and Toys for Tots again this year to make the holidays brighter for local children,” said Sean M. O’Brien, president and principal officer, Teamsters Local 25. “Last year we delivered more than four van loads of toys—totaling $75,000—to Toys for Tots, and we’ve set our sights higher this year. The holidays are about giving back and I can’t think of a better present then putting a smile on a child’s face during this time of year.” Toys can be dropped off to the union hall, located across from the Schrafft’s Building in Charlestown at 544 Main St., during…
