Congratulations to Paul Tranfaglia for receiving the most votes on his image.
The votes are in, and local photographer Paul Tranfaglia's image of the Bunker Hill-Zakim Bridge as seen from Pleasant Street is the winner of Charlestown Patch's Facebook cover photo contest. The image was one of more than 20 that were submitted through the contest, and it received 13 votes in the final round, which ran Nov. 19-21. "Some very fantastic photos here. But I will vote for #2 because it best depicts Charlestown," Patch reader Bette Task wrote about Tranfaglia's picture. Another Patch reader, C Ellis, wrote: "#2 shows a neighborhood, which to me represents Charlestown best." [UPDATED, Wednesday, 8:40 a.m.] According to people who track this stuff, as of November 2012 Facebook has about 1 billion users and more than 42 million pages. That's a lot of people talking, sharing photos and playing Farmville. Quite a few Charlestown businesses have joined Facebook, where they share updates, deals, photos and other information with people who "like" their pages. Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson is looking to learn about offering paperless voter registration—and the ability to do it Facebook, too.
Looking to increase and save money on voter registration, Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson called for a hearing to assess the feasibility of paperless voter registration—and using Facebook to register online. During Wednesday's Boston City Council meeting, District 7's councilor spoke about the state of Washington offering the ability to register to vote online through Facebook by using a program engineered by Facebook and Microsoft. Jackson said research has show that voting online costs three cents while voting on paper costs eight cents. New York City is offering online voting registration, as well, said Jackson. Last week the smiling face of Mark Zuckerberg was front page news in papers around the country. The much anticipated IPO of the social media company he co-founded concluded the first day with an estimated value for Facebook of $105 billion. The results of this unimaginable event made Facebook the 25th largest company in the United States. The size may seem surprising for many reasons but statistically, 1 out of every 13 people on Planet Earth use Facebook. The exponential growth in popularity of this company has given rise to many theories and critiques. There's much advice out there regarding Facebook shares going on sale today after it set its initial public offering stock price at $38 per share. Some say you shouldn't buy it today. Facebook has updated our page format. What image do think we should use up top?
Facebook forced all pages to transition to its new Timeline format last week, including the Facebook Page for Charlestown Patch. As a result, our Facebook page now features a cover photo. For the moment, we're using a photo of there taken for a Pearl Harbor Day photo gallery. But we'd like to put up something different, and we'd like you to help us. We've had a number of great photos on our Photo of the Day feature. Perhaps we should use one of those. Perhaps, instead, we should use an all-new image from you. If you have an image you'd like us to use, upload it to this gallery. If it's an image from our Photo of the Day feature, post a link to it in the comments.

Facebook follower tells complainer to "get a life."
Charlestown Patch’s social media followers had a sharp response Monday to a link we posted to a post about motorcycles parked outside the Teamsters Local 25 building in Sullivan Square. A user at citizens connect posted this complaint: “Every time the Teamsters meet they park their bikes there and they are NEVER ticketed. If an ordinary citizen parked their bike there try would be towed They also park their cars in the Sullivan Circle rotary and, again, are never ticketed. Why is this allowed to happen?” Our Facebook followers took offense to the complaint. “It's once a month for 9 months out of the year on Sundays. A Facebook group urging residents in Charlestown to get out the vote is building support on the social network.
A new community group has popped up on Facebook: Vote Charlestown. Their goal seems to be straightforward: Get more people in the neighborhood to the polls in upcoming city, state and national elections. They've cited that the turnout in the last local election was 1,607 out of the 10,747 registered voters in Charlestown. Organizers behind the group want to demonstrate that the Charlestown vote is strong and that people in the community are plugged into local issues, and want to hold their elected officials accountable.
