Columbus Day, a nationally recognized federal holiday, falls on Monday, Oct. 8 this year. While it is an opportunity for some to sleep in on a Monday, the holiday itself is also interesting, and a great time to celebrate and shop. Columbus Day remembers Italian explorer Christopher Columbus’ long journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the “New World." The voyage was victorious when land was first spotted on Oct. 12, 1492. The USS Anzio is docked alongside the USS Constitution in Charlestown. You can take a free tour of the World War II-era ship from noon to 4 p.m. Monday. You can also enjoy free admission to the Museum of Fine Arts, which is hosting its fall open house. Because its a holiday, parking meters are free and the MBTA is running…

The state is warning that road work on Saturday and Sunday may cause backups as long as 20 miles on I-93.
If you're driving this Columbus Day weekend, avoid I-93 northbound in Boston. The state has issued a travel advisory that road work will narrow I-93 to one lane from the Tip O'Neil Tunnel to the Zakim Bridge, according to the Herald. Backups of 20 miles are expected for northbound travelers. The closures are planned to start Friday at 10 p.m. and go until 10 a.m. Saturday.
