Painter of Walford Way to Present at Art in the Park

Event begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, weather permitting.

Remember our story about Dennis Smith, the painter of Walford Way? Well, now you’ll have a chance to see his art. Following the publication of our story, an anonymous donor stepped forward to sponsor Smith to get a spot at the upcoming Art in the Park event at City Square Park. The cancer-stricken Smith told Charlestown Patch recently that art has become his lifeline, and he hungered for an outlet to show his work. Now, he has one. “Come on out, and see what kept me motivated,” Smith wrote in a post for the event on our events page. I was there was such a living day p/s i was there with 80pieces of inspiring art in a sense i was"nt there.No support ,the only support i recieve was a little girl she was about 5years old .her father and mother was across from my booth ,watching her ,she was so amaize with my art ,the colours,that little girl looked at every one of my paintings ,thats what uplifted me ,and a good friend of mines…   more ›

City Square Concert Moved to Tonight

Trample Trio band stands in for the Ire Roots.

Thunderstorms washed out last night's scheduled City Square Concert Series event, but the show will go on tonight, according to Grace Bloodwell: We are pleased to announce that the City Square Concert is ON for tonight! The Ire Roots cannot perform, but we have a pinch hit Tamale Trio Band who will certainly entertain the crowd with their songs, spirit, and antics. The concert starts 5:30 and goes till 7, so please spread the word and get people out for a picnic.

City Square Park Renews Summer Concert Series

Series returns the same three bands you enjoyed last year.

The Friends of City Square Park sent over the following information about the return of its summer concert series. We've edited it for format and added the schedule. Spring is here and a great summer is just around the corner. Bring the family and meet friends every third Wednesday of June, July, and August for the popular Citibank sponsored Concert Series from 5:30–7:00p.m. The Boogaloo Swamis are kicking off the season on Wednesday June 20 with some spicy Cajun flavor, on July 18 come on down and groove to Reggae by the Irie Roots, and in August tap your feet to the tunes of local New Orleans-style band, Dirty Water.   Please our website,citysquarepark.org to become a member and to support our beautiful park! 9/11 Memorial Set for City Square

Neighborhood organizations will host a memorial service at City Square Park on Sept. 11 to recognize the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

There will be a local memorial event to recognize the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday, Sept. 11 in City Square. The Friends of City Square Park, the Mothers Association and Gardens for Charlestown, as well as elected officials, local clergy and representatives from the Boston Fire Department will gather in the park at noon. There will be a flag raising, a color guard and music.  There will be some seating available, but neighbors are welcome to bring their own chairs.

Three Ways to Get Outside Today

A summer concert, a free outdoor movie and family yoga in the park.

Today is Wednesday, July 20. Here are five things you need to know today.  1. It's a good day for stretching. It's a great day to be outside. Local yoga guru (and Patch columnist) Karen Fabian will be leading a free family-yoga class today at noon at City Square Park.  2. Here's another way to get out today: Charlestown Against Drugs, along with a handful of other organizations, is hosting a free outdoor movie night this evening at the Training Field. They'll be screening the Pixar movie Monsters, Inc. Bring your own chairs or blankets and snacks. The movie starts around dusk. 3.
