Charlestown Mothers: Cuts Will Hurt Families

Navy Yard depends on ferry boats.

The following was submitted by the Charlestown Mothers Association. It has been edited only for format. Dear Mr. Davey:  The Board Members of the Charlestown Mothers Association have reviewed the recently proposed fare hikes and service reductions for the MBTA. The proposed cuts in service to Charlestown in both Scenario 1 and Scenario 2, will have a negative impact on our families and neighbors in Charlestown, and we are writing you to express our opposition.  We understand that both proposals include the elimination of the ferry service from the Charlestown Navy Yard. Doing so would have a dramatic impact on the residents of the Navy Yard, as well as families throughout Charlestown. The Navy Yard has become a vibrant residential community…

Mom Talk

In Charlestown, It Takes a Village

In a neighborhood already dense with civic activity, the success of the Charlestown Mothers Association's many projects may be helping families stay in the city.

If there's any group in America that gets as much done for families and kids in their community as this group of Boston moms, I'd like to know. It sounds like an exaggeration. But from its welcome baskets for new moms to the dozens of events it hosts each year, the Charlestown Mothers Association (CMA) runs on the power of sheer, optimistic volunteerism – and no money of its own. And as it turns out, it's very difficult to find another group anywhere who has the audacity to welcome its members for free, yet offer so much programming. Since 1997, the CMA has grown from a handful of moms to 1,000, charging no membership fees but with full faith that the enthusiasm of its volunteers will transform more members into the crew that keeps the …

5 Meetings and Events Not to Miss This Week

The latest on the Rutherford Ave/Sullivan Square redesign, plus the Charlestown Mothers Association gala.

Today is Monday, Oct. 17. Here are five things you need to know today. 1. There's been a lot of activity related to the Kennedy Center Board in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the board asked long-time director Kate McDonough to resign from her post and, when she declined, they fired her. Directors have also voted to postpone an upcoming election for open seats on the board. They've just opened the search for a new director. And tonight they're hosting their regular meeting at the Kennedy Center. If you've got any questions about what's going on, here's your chance to ask them. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at 23 Moulton St. 2. What's going on with the Rutherford Avenue/Sullivan Square redesign? The Neighborhood Council is hosting a …

2 points: 1) I was elected to that Council in 1998. I wanted to serve only 1 2-year term. After we got Resident Parking passed (which was a big concern at the time), I decided my 'job was done.' 2) To be honest, I don't give the Council (or how they communicate with the community) much thought these days. It's nothing personal towards it's members; It's just that NATIONAL politics are more …   more ›

5 Things Parents Need To Know About BPS Registration

Getting your child signed up for school can be daunting. Here's a summary on how to get started.

This week the Charlestown Mothers Association hosted a "meet the schools" event where more than 30 representatives from public, private and charter schools were on hand to answer questions about navigating the city's educational options. Boston Public Schools officials led a brief session on getting your child into the right public school for your family. Here's a summary on registering for BPS. 1. You can start looking anytime, online. Boston Public Schools has a website that can tell you exactly what your public school options are, based on your address and the age of your child. 2.  Siblings stay together.  The lottery system that determines if your child is accepted into their preferred school gives priority to students who already …
