Patch Chats with Paolo's Trattoria

The Italian bistro on Main Street serves dinner seven days per week beginning at 5 p.m.

Whether you're looking for a family-friendly restaurant where you can dine with the kids or a date night setting with a romantic feel, Paolo's Trattoria in Charlestown is your spot. The two took over the restaurant from the previous owner, kept the name and updated some other aspects, striving to offer a neighborhood bistro where everyone feels welcome. Charlestown Patch sat down recently with Donovan to talk about how he and Hawk came to own the bistro and what they hope to provide there.  How did you get started with Paolo’s? I worked on the executive level for a company called Lyons …

Crate Escape's third location will be at 200 Terminal St., Charlestown.

Busy pet owners in Charlestown and downtown Boston soon will have a new place to bring their pups while they are at work. Hi Mary Kay, Crate Escape had a booth at the Open Market last summer and we were amazed how many dogs visited us. Plus, Charlestown residents are so friendly, like people saying, 'No I don't have a dog, but my neighbor does; I will give her a brochure'. The temperament test is kind of like an interview; we introduce the new dog slowly to other dogs at daycare. And, we HOPE the town is going to …   more ›

Celebrate Small Business in Charlestown

What local shop, restaurant or other business can you not live without?

Next week is a busy one for local businesses, with the pre-Thanksgiving rush—people getting new clothes, new haircuts and stocking up on food, wine and other purchases—followed by the official kick-off to the holiday shopping season, Black Friday, and the 21st-century creation, Cyber Monday, when online companies offer special deals to entice the first round of holiday spenders. In between, on Saturday, Nov. 24, is a new holiday launched by American Express: Small Business Saturday aims to draw attention to and celebrate the importance of the small, locally owned businesses in communities around the country—the little guys, or medium-sized guys or even the big guys that started here in Charlestown, chose to stay and contribute in many ways…

5 Questions For Pura Vida

Daren Lechner talks with Patch about his new home furnishings showroom in Charlestown.

Located in the old Crosby Steam Gauge & Valve Co. building on Roland Street, which dates back to 1888, the new home furnishings store Pura Vida is itself a reclaiming of something old, made new again. Shop owner Daren Lechner has created an interesting showroom on the building’s third floor—a series of vignettes designed to draw in the eye, appeal to the senses and give the shopper a truly original experience. The shop name, “Pura Vida,” is a Costa Rican phrase that means “pure life," and Lechner tries to carry that natural feel throughout his business.  Below, Lechner talks with Charlestown Patch about how he chooses what to sell in his shop, where he gets it, and the unique experience of shopping at Pura Vida. Why did you decide to open …
