The people of Charlestown honored their city and remembered the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing on Wednesday in Eden Park with candles, prayer and music, including a version of “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes. “We’re all here and we’re going to get through this,” Townie Association member and Charlestown resident Sean Boyle told the crowd of several hundred. “They messed with the wrong city. It’s Boston. You know what I mean—we’re tough. We’re all proud to be American; we all live here in the birthplace of freedom, right where it all started.” The event was organized quickly by the Townie Association, the Charlestown Substance Abuse Coalition and Charlestown Against Drugs and included prayers by Father Dan Mahoney of St. Francis de …

With the recent legalization of marijuana in Washington state, pictures were published of young adults gleefully using the drug in public. We believe this sends the wrong message to our young people, especially pre-teens who typically look up to or admire young adults. Parents should consider pointing out that because something is legal does not mean it is acceptable. Marijuana is a proven “gateway drug,” and for those who move on to stronger drugs the battle back is difficult and lifelong. The devastation along the way is something that is all too familiar; every effort should be made to avoid it. Mike Charbonnier, CHAD President Charlestown Against Drugs Inc. The organization will be calling families that signed up for the program to pick up their coats in the next week or so.
The deadline to sign up for a children’s coat through Charlestown Against Drugs’ annual Christmas For Kids drive has passed. CHAD accepted applications from Charlestown residents wanting to participate in the program through 5 p.m. on Monday. By Wednesday, all the coats had been purchased and were being readied for delivery, according to Christine Vraivel, community service officer with Boston Police Department. Vraivel said some calls had come in after the deadline from residents interested in signing up for the program, but no more applications are being accepted. A total of 217 people signed up for children’s coats this year, Vraivel said. “It’s always just around 200—maybe it’s shy of 200 or a couple over, but it’s usually right around…

I was just told this was on here-- and I just wanted to say how impressed I was to see my fellow townies there to support the victims of the Boston Marathon Bombings. I was at ground zero when the bombs went off on the medical sweep bus and as we picked up the remaining runners, terrified, cold, scared and hungry getting them to safety and helping at the shelters in Newton I had a sense of Pride …   more ›
