VIDEO: Climbing the Bunker Hill Monument

Charlestown Patch joined local resident Elena Barbera on Day 29 of her 30-day challenge to raise $8,820 for Boston Marathon bombing victims.

Charlestown Patch joined Charlestown resident Elena Barbera on Day 29 of her 30-day climb of the Bunker Hill Monument, Tuesday, May 21, to raise money for the 14 victims of the Boston Marathon bombing who are now amputees. Local resident and 2013 Boston Marathoner Jack Kelly also joined the climb. Click on the video above to hear Elena talk about the project and offer some tips for climbing the monument's 294 steps (as of Wednesday, she will have climbed 8,820 steps over the past month, so she's kind of an expert). Then move your mouse finger over to Elena's GoFundMe page and add your donation. All proceeds will help support the recovery of people who lost limbs in the April 15 bombings.

Charlestown Woman Taking Final Steps of 30-Day Bunker Hill Monument Climb

Elena Barbera has been climbing the local monument every day since April 23 to raise money for the amputee victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

With just two days left of her 30-day Bunker Hill Monument climbing challenge, Charlestown resident Elena Barbera hasn’t yet decided how she will celebrate reaching her goal. But she thinks it will probably involve a big ice cream sundae. Barbera began her month-long journey on April 23, promising to climb the monument’s 294 steps every day through May 22 to raise money to help the 14 people who lost a limb in the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15. “I wanted to do something, take some sort of action for the victims, particularly for the amputees, because I could only afford to give a small amount to any one of them or to the One Fund but I wanted to raise more money than I could give,” Barbera said. “So had the idea to climb the …

Picture Charlestown: Bunker Hill Sky

A closer look at life in Charlestown.

Charlestown photographer Glenn Clabo captured these two images recently on the same morning—one of an amazing sky over the Bunker Hill Monument and the other of the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge reflected in the water. "The monument probably has been photographed from every angle every season and time of day, but this morning the sky was interesting so I just had to," Clabo said of the first image. "And then I walked down to the water and saw the the bridge reflection and couldn't resist." Got a great photograph of Charlestown? Email it to becca.manning@patch.com, text to 781-217-4233 or tweet @CharlestwnPatch, including a line or two about where or when the photo was taken.

Ice Cream Vendor Working With Park Service

National Park Service rules stipulate that mobile vendors must move, but Mitch Peters and the NPS are working on a compromise.

Mitch Peters enjoys parking his truck in Monument Square, selling ice cream to visitors and giving real, townie directions to tourists. “I’ve been doing this truck for about 20 years now,” Peters said. “It’s not just an ice cream truck. It’s part of the community.” When people ask him for local advice, he said he always sends them to local businesses. But, as in earlier years, he faces a potential challenge this year form the National Park Service. “In order for a commercial operation such as a stationary vendor to be permitted on National Park Service property in Monument Square, we would have to allow the general public to participate in an open bidding process for that business opportunity,” said Sean Hennessey, a spokesman for the …

Let Mitch stay put! My family had the pleasure of meeting him back in May 2012. What a sweet and sincere guy. Enjoyed his interesting stories and facts about Charlestown as well as his ice cream. He is a real gem in the neighborhood and we hope to find him the next time we visit Boston.   more ›
