President Barrack Obama announced John Kerry is his choice to be Secretary of State Friday.
If President Barack Obama has his way, Massachusettts Senator John Kerry will replace Hilary Clinton as Secretary of State Obama nominated Kerry for position Friday after much speculation that the Massachusetts senator was his choice for the position. If Kerry is appointed, an interim senator will be named to the position before a special election can be held. There is also speculation that Senator Scott Brown (R-Wrentham) will run for the senate after losing the general election in November to Elizabeth Warren. A Vietnam War veteran, Kerry has served on the Foreign Relations Committee for 27 years and has been the chairman for the last six years. Massachusetts Democrats in Congress want to avoid cuts in benefits as part of any deal, but proposals such as raising the eligibility age for Medicare are still on the table. What would you do?
As Congress negotiates a deal to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff" on Jan. 1, Massachusetts' congressional representatives have voiced their opposition to any cuts in benefits such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, the Boston Globe reports. However, there are proposals still on the table that would change those benefit programs, including linking Social Security benefits to a more conservative inflation index that would slightly reduce annual increases, or raising the eligibility age for Medicare from 65 to 67. The Globe reported that while the Bay State's legislators were united against changes to Social Security, there's some wiggle room on Medicare. Rep. Democratic US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren took home more votes in Boston than Republican US Sen. Scott Brown. According to the Boston's Elections Department with 97% of precincts reporting, Warren received 73% of the vote, for a total of 177,823. Brown received 25% of the vote in Boston for 62,528. As expected, President Barack Obama also won Boston, beating former Governor Mitt Romney. Obama received 78%, or 190,081. While Romney received 19% of Boston votes with 47,214. Libertarian Gary Johnson candidate earned .84% of the vote, with 2,028 votes. Green Party candidate Jill Stein earned .84% of the vote, with 2,020 votes. President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you."
