Named in memory of Charlestown High School graduate Alray Taylor, the program helps students return to school for post-secondary degrees or certificates.
Boston public school students who are looking for a second chance at college are encouraged to apply for a scholarship program designed to help them earn that degree. The Alray Scholars Program offers scholarships of up to $5,000 for public school students who left college early and want to go back for their degrees. The scholarship is named in memory of Alray Taylor, a Mission Hill native and Charlestown High School graduate who left college early but had plans to return when he was tragically shot just a few days before his 22nd birthday, in August 2006. “Alray's death was crushing to the many family and friends who had been touched by his warm heart. Charlestown High School ROTC cadets got a history lesson at the African American Veterans Memorial last weekend, spending time with members of the 54th Regiment (as seen in the movie "Glory") and with reenactors from the Buffalo Soldiers.

Diploma Plus students focused on the effects of substance abuse during a recent week-long program.
Students in the Diploma Plus program at Charlestown High School recently participated in an interdisciplinary week of study called “Ecological Systems: Scrutinizing the War on Drugs.” Students looked at the effects of substance abuse, imprisonment, and poverty on individuals, neighborhoods, cities, and America as a whole. Students asked deep questions about the ramifications of certain social policies and laws, and they studied the ways we understand addiction both scientifically and culturally. “There was a lot of debate this week,” Charlestown resident and Diploma Plus student Priscilla Chiu said. “We talked about all the ways drugs affect people.” One topic Chiu learned about was the prison system, especially the financial costs related…

Dr. Pam Eddinger will take over following the retirement of Mary Fifield on July 1.
Bunker Hill Community College has named a new president. Following a six-month search, the college—with campuses in Charlestown, Chelsea and the South End—has named Dr. Pam Y. Eddinger as its new president. Eddinger comes to Bunker Hill from Moorpark College in California, where she has served as president since 2008. Prior to that, she worked as vice president of MassBay Community College in Wellesley. Business major Valter Gomes was selected for the award along with 28 other students from Massachusetts institutes of higher learning.
A Bunker Hill Community College student this week was named one of "29 Who Shine" at colleges across Massachusetts. Valter Gomes is a business major at BHCC, which has a campus in Charlestown, and was one of 29 public college and university students to be recognized for their academic achievements and civic contributions to the Commonwealth. Gomes, an honors student who is co-president of the BHCC Sustainability Club, spearheaded the “Rethink the Way You Drink" campaign, which led to the installation of a water hydration system at BHCC's Charlestown campus. Boston area teens looking for a little help getting ready for prom can shop for free at a special boutique this Saturday. Organized by United Sisters of Color, ABCD Health Services and At-Large Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley, Operation Prom Dress and Tuxedo provides an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to pick up new prom dresses, suits, tuxedos and shoes at no cost. For months, the group has been collecting items to give away, and on Saturday, April 27, they will host a “Day at the Boutique” at Hibernian Hall, 184 Dudley St., Boston.
