Charlestown to Highlight History with Clean-Up, Walking Tour This Weekend

Boston is celebrating National Historic Preservation Month in May.

A month of activities in honor of historic preservation in Boston will begin on Saturday in Charlestown.

National Historic Preservation Month begins Thursday, May 1, and as part of that the city of Boston is engaging in several events under the theme of "Buildings and Grounds," which will celebrate the history of Charlestown and Boston, according to the Charlestown Patriot-Bridge

The celebration is set to begin in Charlestown at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Phipps Street Burying Ground with a spring clean-up, hosted by the Charlestown Preservation Society. An archaeology walking tour will then follow at 11 a.m.

"Boston’s historic buildings and landscapes enrich our neighborhoods," Boston Mayor Martin Walsh said in a statement this week. "They enhance the daily experiences of our residents and visitors. I hope residents and visitors alike will take advantage of all the excellent programming we’re offering this month."
