February has Throats, Book Club, Adult Confirmation

February 1 and 2. Monday, February 3, is the feast of Saint Blaise. As is our tradition, we will celebrate the feast this weekend. After all of the weekend Masses, we will bless the throats of all who come forward. While invoking the intercession of St. Blaise, we will pray that all are protected from afflictions of the throat and from other illnesses.

St. Blaise was bishop of Sebaste in Armenia in the fourth century. Before being martyred, he is said to have healed a boy who was choking. Since the eighth century, Saint Blaise has been venerated as the patron of those who suffer from diseases of the throat. The blessing of Saint Blaise is a sign of our faith in God’s protection and love for us and for the sick. (St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren)

February 19. The next Parish Book Club will discuss Mercy in the City: How to Feed the Hungry, Give Drink to the Thirsty, Visit the Imprisoned, and Keep Your Day Job by Kerry Weber. Weber’s colleague at America, Fr. Jim Martin, S.J., M.S., has this to say on the author:  “Kerry Weber is one of the brightest new voices in American Catholicism … In all of her writing, she combines a deep faith, a talent for crystal clear writing and and eye for the inspirational, lighthearted and even humorous. Kerry’s new book is a wonderful introduction to mercy in the modern world, and it deserves a wide, wide readership.”

Book Group will meet February, 19 at 7:00 PM at the Parish Center for a discussion on the current selection.

February 15. Many adults who have been Baptized and have made their First Communion in the Catholic Church have never had the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. For those Catholics, maybe it's time to deepen your relationship with God who loves and cares about you;to re-engage your world again as a Catholic more informed about your faith and its impact in your life;to re-new yourself and others through the unique power of the Holy Spirit who guides us in Love and Truth.

Candidates 18 years of age or older will attend five 90-minute classes beginning Saturday, February 15 at 11:30AM to prepare for this Sacrament. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred on Sunday, April 27 at the 11AM Mass.  If you are interested in more information or would like to register for these classes, please call the Parish Center at 617-242-4664. We look forward to hearing from you.
