Charlestown Native Scores First Goal for BU Hockey

BU freshman Matt Grzelcyk was also named Hockey East Rookie of the Week.

Charlestown native Matt Grzelcyk scored his first collegiate goal in Boston University hockey’s Nov. 11 game against Boston College.

The 11th-ranked BU Terriers ultimately fell 4-2 to the No. 1 BC Eagles.

“Grzelcyk enters this Friday's game [Nov. 16] at Vermont on a four-game point streak, having tallied a goal and four assists during the stretch,” according to a news release posted on goterriers.com. “He is one of three freshman defensemen in the country currently averaging at least one point per game.”

The local defenseman was also named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.

In June, Grzelcyk, a freshman at BU, was chosen by the Bruins in the third round of the NHL draft.

He is the son of Kathleen and John Grzelcyk and is majoring in business administration and management at BU’s School of Management, according to his profile on goterriers.com.
