The Charlestown Townies brought a different style of team to this weekend’s Division 1 North basketball finals—small and quick, according to Boston.com versus Lexington’s roster of big and powerful players.
In the end, small and quick did it. The townies squeezed out a 48-44 victory and will advance to the Division 1 Eastern Mass Final tonight against Brockton at the TD Garden.
Both Boston.com and ESPN Boston described the game as tight. With just seconds left, the Townies clung to a one-point lead, until senior Rony Fernandez came out of a time out to sink a three-pointer and expand the team’s safety buffer.
Both teams scored again, each sinking two-pointers, but the Townies’ lead held.
Now, they move on to face Brockton. Should they defeat the recently-crowned Division 1 South champion, they’ll move on to the state championships.
ESPN Boston notes that Brockton has lost only two games all season, but one of those losses was “an 18-point drubbing at the hands of this same Charlestown team.”
The game begins at 7:45 p.m.
