LaMattina Easily Takes District 1 City Council Race, Kelly Fails in At-Large Bid

Nearly 40 percent of voters came out in Boston Tuesday.

The current district City Councilor for Charlestown will be returning to City Hall while a Charlestown residents attempt to join the council as an at-large candidate failed according to the results from Boston on election night, Tuesday, Nov. 5. 

Incumbent Sal LaMattina overwhelmed challenger Brian Gannon, receiving 70.8 percent of the vote in District 1 which includes Charlestown, East Boston and the North End to Gannon's 28.7 percent. In raw votes, LaMattina nearly broke into six digits with 99,847 votes with all precincts calling in their results.

In the At-large City Council race, Ayanna Pressley (18.3 percent), Michelle Wu (18 percent) Michael Flaherty (16.6 percent) and Stephen Murphy (13.5 percent) won seats to the board.  

Charlestown's Jack Kelly, a former neighborhood coordinator for Mayor Tom Menino, finished eighth in the race, garnering 7.2 percent of the vote.

Citywide, 40 percent of voters took out ballots, helped by a large number of East Boston residents who came out to vote on the non-binding resolution on building a $1 billion casino at Suffolk Downs, which was defeated.
