A contractor upgrading the Boston Water and Sewer Commission's meter reading software has reported a data breach, according to an article in the Boston Herald.
A hard drive that is believed to contain water and sewer customer account information, such as names, phone numbers, addresses and account and meter numbers was reported missing.
The good news is the lost data does not contain any Social Security numbers, financial data or state license or identification numbers.
“In light of these circumstances, the Commission believes that it is unlikely that this event would lead to any misuse of customers’ personal information,” the letter states.
However, if the drive falls into the wrong hands, someone could use the bits of data to "fish" for further confidential information.
