According to the Boston Globe, a woman was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital after jumping from the upper deck of the Tobin Bridge last night.

The jumper, whose name hasn’t been released, began threatening to leap shortly before 5:50 p.m., causing police to briefly close one lane on the bridge, a state police spokesman told the Globe.

The woman was spotted in the water by a marine unit, and was alive when she was pulled from the Mystic River.

Troopers pulled the woman from the water and began administering emergency medical aid, and were met on the Charlestown side of the river by Boston EMS, who brought her to Mass. General where she was pronounced deceased at 7:08 p.m.

State police located the victim's vehicle on the upper deck of the bridge, and were able to identify the woman—a 36-year-old Rhode Island resident—through vehicle registration, according to state police.

A subsequent investigation confirmed the woman's identity—which is being withheld—and determined the death was a suicide.

No further information has been released at this time.

I watched as they pulled the woman from the water, it was very disturbing. As the ambulances arrived at the docks the state police seamed to be in no rush, so it was obvious she wasn't in a good condition at the time. As I drove over the bridge today it was hard to fathom that someone would drive all the way up from RI with the intention of jumping and there was nothing there to stop her. I know there are a few signs that list a suicide prevention phone number, it would be great if there were other ways to stop these people from taking their life by jumping.

@Brian: I couldn't agree more ... Maybe some kind of cage or fence ... What does everyone else think? Should there be more safety precautions on the Tobin to curb jumpers?

I was working up there when it happened, I'm a toll collector, I seen everything and it wasn't the first time
