Whole Foods Hosting Weekend Effort to Help Less Fortunate Residents

Shoppers at the store at 51 Austin St. can contribute food from a list or donate to Lovin' Spoonful and Harvest on Vine.

This weekend will be the time when Charlestown families will be heading to the local supermarket stocking up in preparation of the coming Thanksgiving Day feast.

And this weekend, neighborhood residents can help a less fortunate local family enjoy the coming holiday.

Whole Foods Market at 51 Austin St. is hosting for the entire weekend, Nov. 23 and 24, volunteers from the local nonprofit partner Harvest on Vine who will be in the store distributing lists with most needed items, giving customers the chance to purchase and donate in person. The list includes staples such as canned gravy and cranberry sauce as well as frozen turkeys.

On Saturday, Nov. 23, Whole Foods Market will donate a frozen turkey to Harvest on Vine for each of the first 25 sold. In addition to spreading goodwill in their community by donating food to hungry families, customers will also have the opportunity to meet and donate to Lovin’ Spoonfuls food rescue, the store’s food bank partner, and the Bunker Hill Housing Authority Community Task Force, for whom the store is holding a holiday toy drive.

Since the Charlestown store opening was announced in 2012, Whole Foods Market has donated directly to Harvest on Vine and other nonprofits in the community with funds, product, and volunteer hours. Lovin’ Spoonfuls has assisted in this effort by picking up product at the store and delivering over 13,480 pounds of food to Harvest on Vine and other food pantries in the Boston area.
