3 Delicious Ideas for Winter Squash

As you shop for produce you can expect your local grocer to have a bevy of winter squash varieties. Whether it’s a butternut, acorn, delicata, or a plump pumpkin, there are tons of ways to cook autumn’s most delicious gourds.

Before you decide how to use squash in your next meal, we’ve got some fresh ideas on how to spice up the squash season!

1. Pair it with great flavors!
The meat of a squash is very absorbent and can soak up flavors like a sponge while roasting. For your next squash roast, drizzle it with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and add one of these flavor combinations to your dish. You could even mix a couple of them to add more flavor!

  • Sage & Rosemary
  • Garlic & Ginger
  • Chili Peppers & Curry
  • Maple Syrup  & Chopped Apples

2.  Make it an entrée!
Squash is great on its own for a side dish, but it can make a great entrée if cooked with some other items. Try one of these hearty squash entrees!

3. Use every little bit!
Save the seeds while you prepare your squash. They can be roasted with salt and pepper or any other spices for an added treat. Here are some ideas for what to do with your roasted seeds when finished.

  • Salad Topper – toss on salads for an added crunch.
  • Trail Mix – mix them with nuts and dried fruits for a healthy trail mix.
  • Pizza Topping – sprinkle on homemade pizza for a unique, flavorful topping.
