Mayoral Candidate Marty Walsh Weighs in on Wynn Casino Issue

The Dorchester resident released a statement saying Charlestown should have a voice.

As city officials consider the role Boston might play in reviewing Wynn LLC’s plans for a resort casino in Everett, mayoral candidate Marty Walsh issued a statement saying he feels Charlestown residents should have a voice on the decision.

“Just as East Boston has a voice in deciding if a casino should be located at Suffolk Down, Charlestown should have a say on the proposal to build a casino development at the former Monsanto Chemical Plant site off Route 99,” Walsh said in the statement, dated July 11.

He continued: “Boston should assert Charlestown's status as a host community, and declare it an inappropriate area of the city for such a development given the extreme impacts from such a project at this location. For the state to do otherwise would allow this developer to circumvent the Gaming Law and force an inappropriate development on an unwilling community.”

Though detailed plans are not yet available for the casino, the developer has filed an environmental notification form with the state. City officials have made the form available at the Charlestown Branch Library and requested a two-week extension for public comment on the plans.
